Kawhi Leonard Free Agency Odds: Lakers Have A Strong Shot To Sign Star Forward

The Lakers are reportedly in a strong position to land Leonard but it’s not a done deal yet. According to FS1’s Chris Broussard, the Lakers are his first choice but he has some requests for them, including staff additions:

“I’m being told the Lakers are Kawhi Leonard’s first choice. He and his camp spoke with Magic yesterday and laid out what they want from the Lakers. Nothing crazy, just some additions to the staff and asking ‘Is Kawhi going to be treated like LeBron in the organization?’ and all of that. As long as Jeanie doesn’t do anything to screw it up in the meeting I’m told that’s his first choice.”

Per multiple reports, Leonard met with the Clippers last night. Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins (who said that Kevin Durant would join the Nets) confirmed the rumors:

“Just heard that Kawhi is meeting with the Clippers tonight but the Lakers hold the upper hand, unless Doc work his Magic tonight it’s looking very strong that Kawhi will be in Purple and Gold!!!”

Acquired in a trade with the Spurs last year, Leonard led the Raptors to their first NBA Championship after putting together a playoff run for the ages. This is what he had to say about his journey this past year:

“A lot of people doubted me, thought I was either faking an injury or didn’t want to play for a team. That was disappointing to me.”

Leonard became the first player to win NBA Finals MVP in both conferences. He won the award for the first time in 2014 with the Spurs, when he beat the then two-time defending champion Heat.

The now two-time NBA champion averaged 28.5 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.2 blocks on 43.3 percent shooting in 40.5 minutes over six games in the NBA Finals against the Warriors, becoming the first player since Larry Bird in 1984 to lead the league in points, rebounds and steals in an entire playoff.

He finished with 732 points in this playoffs, the third-most by any player in a single playoff behind Michael Jordan in 1992 (759) and LeBron James in 2018 (748).
