Earlier in December Utah beat Phoenix by seven points at home but in their rematch today oddsmakers have made them a bigger favorite. The Jazz is arguably the best defensive team in the league while the Suns is one of the worst. Will Utah blow them out the second time around?

Phoenix Suns

Phoenix is averaging 106.8 points per game while making 39.3 field goals per game both of which rank them eighth in the NBA. They’re coming off a nice win against Toronto but they caught the Raptors in a tough spot in the second leg of a back to back after they played Golden State. Offensively Phoenix is doing what they’ve always done in pushing a fast tempo and trying to get up and down the floor, but defensively they have been atrocious. Despite their quick pace Phoenix has also lacked the ability to move the ball well averaging just 18.5 assists per game which ranks them last in the NBA. As mentioned, the issue tonight will be there defense and currently they rank in the bottom five in just about every major defensive category. Phoenix ranks second to last in the league in defensive scoring, opponent shooting efficiency, and opponent three-point shooting percentage. With Utah able to get their share of stops against Phoenix look for the Jazz to score at will against this very poor defense.

Utah Jazz

Utah’s averaging just over 99 points per game and they rank last in the league in field goals attempted per game. The conflicting styles we have on display tonight I believe favor Utah because of their superior defense and the fact they are at home. Utah ranks first in the NBA in opponent points per game, opponent shooting efficiency, and opponent effective field-goal percentage. They also rank second allowing just 35.7 field goals made per game. From the interior extended this is an extremely good defense that doesn’t allow a lot of three-point attempts and statistically keep teams to low shooting percentages. On the other side of the ball, although they don’t push tempo, they still have been efficient shooting 46.7% from the floor which ranks sixth in the NBA. They also rank fourth and seventh in effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency respectably. I have a hard time believing Phoenix is going to keep this game competitive and I like for Utah to win this going away well into double digits.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers opened up with Utah as a 10.5 favorite across the board and for my NBA pick, I will back them in this spot. Phoenix is going to have a tough time scoring against us very good defense and look for the Jazz to put up points out will. Expect a blowout.
