A bit earlier in the season, Indiana took care of business at home versus Houston beating them by almost 20 points. The Rockets look to return the favorite today in Houston and are favored by double digits. Can Indiana keep Houston’s high-powered offense in check?

Indiana Pacers

Indiana is coming off a tough loss at Miami and things will not get much easier for them tonight against one of the league’s best offenses. However, I think there is value in grabbing them getting double digits considering the fact that Houston plays zero defense. On the season Indiana is averaging 105.3 points per game and rank in the middle the league in most offensive statistics highlighted by shooting 46.5% from the field, ranking them ninth.

They also rank ninth hitting 37% from distance, but what I like about them tonight is the fact that they actually do try to play some semblance of defense compared to Houston. On the season Indiana is allowing opponents just 45.1% shooting from the floor overall which ranks them 10th in the NBA. What could hurt them tonight is the fact they don’t mind going up tempo at times, however even with that being the case they still are allowing just 38.4 opponent field goals made per game which ranks them 10th in the NBA. I don’t expect them to win this game but I expect them to at least stay competitive.

Houston Rockets

Once again Houston put up a ton of points versus Minnesota the other night but I think they’ll be hard-pressed to have the same offensive performance against a pretty decent Indiana defense. Offensively Houston is arguably the second best team in the league averaging 115.2 points per game and shooting 46.6% from the field overall. They also rank second in effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency. For me though this is not about their offensive numbers but more about their lack of defense on the other side of the ball.

Currently, Houston ranks 27th in the league allowing opponents 51.5% on their two-point shots, and they rank 21st in the league allowing opponents 46.2% overall. They also rank in the bottom third of the league in most defensive categories. The only highlight for them on this side of the ball is the fact they do allow opponents just 35% shooting from distance which ranks them seventh in the NBA. Houston will definitely get their share of points tonight but I think they will give up their share as well which makes me like fading them.

Indiana Pacers vs Houston Rockets

Oddsmakers have made Indiana a +10 underdog and for my NBA pick, I will back them in the spot. The Pacers should play just enough defense, and score enough points to hang within the number.
