Wednesday is always one of the best days in the NBA with a ton of good basketball games and today is no different. Looking at the totals we’re going to focus on two of the better matchups today with Portland taking on San Antonio, and Miami traveling to Boston. Will these two good defensive teams produce two low-scoring affairs?

San Antonio at Portland

Oddsmakers have come out with not a surprisingly low total for these two well-coached teams, and for my NBA pick, I’m going to back the under. Portland has completely changed their dynamic from last year and currently is allowing just 100.8 points per game which ranks fourth in the NBA. But more surprising in that is there overall defensive statistics as they rank first in the league in opponent shooting efficiency and third allowing opponents to shoot just 44.3% overall. This will prove a tough matchup for a San Antonio team that has not hit their stride on the offensive end and currently rank 21st in the NBA in shooting efficiency. However, on the other side of the ball, we know that Greg Popovich is going to produce a great defense and that’s what we have with San Antonio who has slowly improved to be one of the better defensive teams in the league statistically. Currently, the Spurs rank fourth in opponent shooting efficiency, but what will be important tonight is that they are allowing just 9.4 opponent three-pointers made per game and allow opponents shoot just 35.1% from distance. This is Portland’s bread-and-butter so it’ll prove a point of contention. In the end, neither these teams will score very much. The first of our NBA picks will be on a lower than expected score.

Much like we see with San Antonio at Portland we have two well-coached defensive teams, but I’m a little bit surprised at the number being over 200 for this matchup on most NBA odds boards. For my NBA pick in this game, I’m going to back over the total as I think will see a surprisingly high-scoring affair. Although both of these teams have been very solid on the defensive end with Boston ranking second in Miami ranking 10th respectively in opponent shooting efficiency, both of these teams have shown the ability to put up some points. On the season the Heat rank in the top part of the league in most offensive categories and they have been really good shooting the ball from distance averaging 11.7 three-pointers made per game which ranks fourth in the NBA. Although Boston has not pushed much tempo they certainly have been efficient ranking ninth in the league in efficiency and they also have been shooting from distance rather well averaging 11.5 three-pointers made per game, which ranks seventh in the NBA. Look for both of these good long-range shooting teams to knock down enough to get is over the total.
