Both the Grizzlies and Rockets are hoping to rebound after losses suffered last night but which side is the right side to include in our NBA picks on Wednesday night?
Memphis Grizzlies (42-17 SU, 29-29-1 ATS)
The Grizzlies hosted the Jazz last night as 7 ½ point home favorites in NBA odds but not only failed to cover but suffered a stunning outright loss to lowly Utah. Perhaps that reversal of fortune can be explained away by absences due to illnesses to Zach Randolph and Beno Udrih as well as a team suspension to defensive whiz Tony Allen. Although Allen is expected back in uniform for tonight’s classic tilt against the powerhouse Rockets it remains to be seen whether or not Randolph and/or Udrih are fit to play.
Houston has been the victim of a brutal schedule after the All-Star break beginning with five games in seven nights and after two days off started a stretch Tuesday night that will see them take the court in four of five nights. It is little wonder some of their players are suffering from fatigue but they better improve upon their performance last night where they were outrebounded by their largest number of the season 55-37 in a 93-82 defeat at home by a team in Utah that shouldn’t have given them a great deal of trouble.
Over their last 10 games Memphis has broken double digits in scoring just once, has assembled a 5-5 record and has covered the NBA odds in just three of those 10 contests. Memphis relies on a suffocating defense which is ranked tops in the NBA but unless they get their scoring on track they will see their number two seed in the West slip away to a team like the one they are playing tonight.
Houston Rockets (41-19 SU, 35-24-1 ATS)
The Houston Rockets have done well without the services of their force in the middle Dwight Howard who continues to rehab after suffering an injury to his right knee on January 23rd. However, they did not welcome the one-game suspension to superstar James Harden for kicking LeBron James earlier this week and his absence was felt in the fourth quarter of last night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks when they went stone cold and ultimately came up on the wrong end of a 104-96 decision yet narrowly covered the 8 ½ point head start in NBA odds granted by the oddsmakers.
Fortunately they will get their MVP candidate back on the floor tonight against an opponent that stands between them and the second seed in the Western Conference rankings. After getting blown out 119-93 in Memphis in their first meeting the Rockets have won and covered the NBA odds in their last two against the Grizzlies with the final of four regular season matchups on tap for tonight in Houston.
Tonight’s NBA Pick
The two players appearing in tonight’s contest that were not present in the previous three meetings are Jeff Green for Memphis and Terrence Jones for Houston. Green was shipped earlier this season via Boston and the mercurial nature of a player blessed with so much talent has reared its head. Green began his tenure in Memphis averaging 12 ½ points per game in his first 18 games for Memphis but has slipped to eight points per game over the last four contests with Memphis losing three of those games.
The long and short here is that the Rockets will have a well-rested James Harden who will undoubtedly be itching to get back on the court after serving his suspension last night and watching his team fall to the Beast of the East the Atlanta Hawks. Houston has enjoyed a huge advantage over the Grizzlies on the glass this season and it should continue tonight with Houston getting a big victory over a weary Memphis squad, add Rockets to your NBA picks tonight.
