Grizzlies Allow Andre Iguodala To Skip Training Camp

The Daily Memphian first reported that Iguodala would be away from the team:

“… we’re trying to figure out things on both sides,” Iguodala told NBC Sports Bay Area in an interview published yesterday. “They’re trying to figure out some things, and I’m trying to figure out some things. As of today, we’re on the same page. Camp opens the next week. We’ll see. We’re on the same page, though.”

Andre Iguodala would like to end his career on a contender, he played with the Warriors for six seasons, won three NBA Championships and was named NBA Finals MVP in 2015. The Grizzlies traded veteran wing CJ Miles to the Wizards for Dwight Howard and then they agreed to buy him out but they don’t want to do the same with Iguodala, probably because they know they can get something in return for him.

The Grizzlies took talented point guard Ja Morant No. 2 overall in the NBA Draft, making him the face of the franchise along with Jaren Jackson Jr. The future is bright but this is clearly a rebuilding team, so forcing Iguodala to play for them made no sense.

This will be the first season without team legends Mike Conley and Marc Gasol in Memphis and they hope to get assets to build their young core once they trade Iguodala.

The Warriors traded Iguodala to the Grizzlies, along with a protected first-round pick in 2024 (protected 1-4), 2025 (protected 1) and 2026 unprotected as part of the salary dump needed to create space under the apron and complete a sign-and-trade deal for D’Angelo Russell.

Iguodala isn’t likely to be a starter with a contender but he has valuable leadership skills and he is capable of being a key member of a second unit. The 35-year-old averaged 9.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 30.0 minutes over 21 playoff games for the Warriors last season and he played a big part in their success over the last six years.
