The New Orleans Pelicans are sellers at Thursday’s trade deadline, making them a tasty NBA pick for Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Jason’s 2018-19 NBA picks record: 12-9 ATS, 0-1 ML (minus-1.15 units), 15-6 Totals

Minnesota (25-28 SU, 26-27 ATS) at New Orleans (24-31 SU, 27-27-1 ATS)

Friday, 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

Free NBA Pick: Pelicans ATS

Best Line Offered: BetOnline

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3569580, "sportsbooksIds":[1096,19,93,238,999991], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

OK folks, we’re going to try this again. We figured the New Orleans Pelicans would be a value NBA pick after they put Anthony Davis in dry dock; the Pellies didn’t get the job done against the San Antonio Spurs, but they are 3-6 SU and 7-2 ATS since Davis last suited up. So let’s keep plucking that chicken, shall we?

Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves looks even better now that New Orleans have downsized even further. We’re in the middle of Trade Deadline Tumult as we go to press, and our loveable street urchins (aka Zack Lowe’s sources) tell us that Nikola Mirotic is heading to the Milwaukee Bucks. I think I have the vapors. Jason Smith and Stanley Johnson are coming to NOLA. They might not even play Friday, depending on how quickly this trade gets finalized, but we’re pounding the Pels anyway. Here’s why.

Okafor + Randle = Profit

The concept here is that the betting market over-reacts when star players are taken out of the equation. Davis (plus-9.1 BPM) is definitely one of those players. In his absence, Jahlil Okafor (minus-1.1 BPM) has stepped up and showed some of the promise he held as the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft; Okafor was part of The Process with the Philadelphia 76ers, only to be outshone by Joel Embiid and fall out of the rotation.

Mirotic (plus-0.1 BPM) was a very useful complementary big next to Davis. His shooting touch will be missed, but the Pelicans still have Julius Randle (plus-1.6 BPM) as I write this. Mirotic also has also missed the last six games for New Orleans, and they’re 5-1 ATS in his absence, so we’re not too worried if Smith (minus-3.7 BPM) or Johnson (minus-2.0 BPM) don’t make it to town for Friday. Quite the opposite, in fact.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Lookin’ good my #Timberwolves. Lookin’....good. ;/a>
— Geoff Ziezulewicz (@JournoGeoffZ) February 6, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

Not Feeling Minnesota

The Timberwolves, meanwhile, don’t appear to have much going on trade-wise. Nobody’s in the market for their collection of sketchy players and albatross contracts, and the front office is in flux, with both GM Scott Layden and interim coach Ryan Saunders possibly in caretaker roles until the end of the season. The Wolves had some zazz right after Saunders took over for Tom Thibodeau, but they’re back in the doldrums at 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five games.

The Wolves also will also be playing the second of back-to-back games after visiting the Orlando Magic on Thursday. There’s plenty of chaos at the trade deadline, so you might want to keep your bet size small for this one, and be willing to change your pick if you don’t like what you see on the NBA odds board once the dust has settled. In the meantime, and in between time, may the sphere be with you.
