Surprised that the Mystics are favored by as many as seven points for tonight’s game? You really shouldn't be. Washington has been the vastly superior team so far this season.
If you want to play it a little safe, you can back the Mystics at anywhere from -280 to -300 on the WNBA odds, which could be too much chalk to take on for some. The total has been moving down quite a bit, starting out at 157 and settling in at 155.
After a hot start at 4-1 through their first five games, the Mystics then went on to lose five consecutive matchups.
However, they've rebounded once again to win three of their last four, making their current record 7-7 heading into tonight's game at home.
In their most recent game, Washington actually topped this very same San Antonio team in an 83-73 victory on the road. Crystal Langhorne had a team-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added even rebounds, while Ivory Latta, Matee Ajavon, and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt all hit double figures as well.
Latta is the team's leading scorer so far at 15.3 points per game, and is also contributing 4.1 assists a contest as well. Langhorne and Monique Currie have been solid inside, averaging 26.0 points and over 12 rebounds a game between them.
Heading into tonight, Washington is a solid 4-2 at home and will try and improve on that mark against the struggling Silver Stars.
San Antonio Silver Stars
Losers of two straight and eight of their past ten, the Silver Stars have to be feeling down on their luck as they head to the nation's capital.
In their recent loss to Washington, Jia Perkins went off for a game-high 22 points and added four assists, three bounds, and four steals. Shenise Johnson went for 15 points and Danielle Adams posted a 14/4/4 line off the bench.
Perkins and the trio of Adams, Johnson, and Danielle Robinson have been putting up a majority of San Antonio's points, but this team just can't seem to put it all together right now.
What's been most concerning is their poor defensive effort. The Silver Stars are allowing 82.5 points per game, which ranks them tenth out of twelve teams in that category.
Their road record is also worrying, considering they've only won two of their eight matches outside of San Antonio. Will they pick up another loss tonight?
Along with the advantage of being at home, the Mystics also have the deeper bench, with as many as six different players who can contribute coming off the pine.
Washington has been playing much better recently and should be feeling confident in their chances after taking care of business against the Silver Stars just a matter of days ago.
When it comes down to it, we just have to go with the hotter team, especially since they have more depth and will be playing in front of their home fans. Let's back the Mystics in this spot as relatively large favorites on their own floor.
