Portland had a much better season last year than most people anticipated while Utah was left just out of the playoffs. This season we might see a reversal of fortunes. On Tuesday Utah visits Portland as a slight road dog, where is the real value in this matchup? Find Out Here!

Utah Jazz

Last season Utah went 40-42 and just barely missed the playoffs but have their core players back for this season. To me, I think the Jazz have the very real potential of being a sleeper team this year as long as they stay healthy. With a good group of returning players including Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, and Rudy Gobert this team won't change much from their scheme of last season and hunker down on defense. There is a little bit of a question if Favors will play tonight but I believe he is healthy enough to go. Whether or not he does decide to suit up I still like Utah getting the points considering they are decently deep across the board. Last year Portland won three out of the four times they matched up beating the Jazz at home by 14 and then four points. With both teams probably coming in still a bit rusty I'm going to back the better defensive team in the Jazz to slow the pace and keep this game close.

Portland Trail Blazers

Last season Portland average 105.1 points per game which ranked fifth in the NBA but allowed 104.7 points per game which ranked them 21st. Much like Utah, Portland has their main players back and have one of the best backcourts in the NBA led by all-world point guard Damian Lillard. I thought last year was a bit of an anomaly and that this team overachieved from what they were supposed to do. Don't look for Portland to catch anybody by surprise this season though and in a tough West conference, I simply don't think they will pick up as many wins. This will be an interesting matchup tonight of two contrasting styles, but Utah has shown the ability to not only beat Portland but play them tough and I think they do so tonight.

Oddsmakers have set Utah from a +5.5 to a +6 underdog across the board. For my NBA pick, I'm in a grab the points with the Jazz at the +6 like at Pinnacle sports, an A+ rated sportsbooks. These teams are very familiar with each other but this is good value on a good team and Portland might even be peaking a little bit ahead of the Clippers on Thursday.
