The Spurs are one of the most banged up teams in the entire NBA, and currently they could be down a couple of starters heading into Charlotte. How will this effect our NBA picks?

The NBA Odds have the Cats as +3 ½ home underdogs, with a total of 192. Although the Bobcats seem like a pretty solid bet here, the total looks a bit safer due to all of the injuries. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but let’s take a look at who could be returning and sitting out for the Spurs.

Injury report

The Spurs were down three starters in their game against the Nets on Thursday, and even though they put up a pretty good fight through the first three quarters, they were not deep enough to stay with the Nets. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli and Kawhi Leonard all missed Thursday’s game, and it looks as if three of those four will miss again tonight.

Although nothing has been confirmed yet, it would surprise me greatly to see Parker play again until after the All Star Break. The Spurs are still a game up on the Blazers for the 2nd seed in the West, and they are only three games back of the Thunder. Parker is arguably their most important piece, and given that the All Star break is only a few days away, sitting him out until after the break is probably a wise move for the Spurs.

However I see Duncan probably making his return. The only reason he sat out on Thursday was because San Antonio played on Wednesday into double overtime, so with a full two days off since that epic win in Washington, I see Duncan returning for his normal 28-30 minutes. However once again, this is all speculation at this point, so before you lock anything in, make sure you check the statuses of both Parker and Duncan.

The Sharp Pick

However at this point, even though I like the Bobcats’ price, I think the total has more value. At 192, an under wager might be the way to go tonight. The Cats may be the most undervalued defensive team in the NBA, and with Kemba Walker back as well, this team has become a true playoff contender in the Eastern Conference. Although that’s not saying much, the Cats have a higher upside than a lot of the other potential 3-8 playoff teams in the East, and against the banged up Spurs, the Cats should hold their ground.

Four of the last five games overall for the Cats have gone under, and four of the last six for the Spurs have done so as well. Although it doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, it’s worth noting that six of the last seven times these two have played one another in Charlotte, the total has gone under.

Charlotte also has some trouble scoring against the West, which is another reason I am hesitant to take the points with the home team. The Bobcats have averaged only 93 points per game against the West this season, and if this game is as slow and methodical as I think it’s going to be, the likelihood of both of these teams passing 95 points is low. I see the under having the best value for our basketball picks.

NBA Pick: UNDER 192
