The marquee matchup on this short slate tonight is the Clippers heading into San Antonio to play the Spurs. The NBA Odds have the Spurs as big -9 favorites, with a total of 200 points.

Playoff Rematch
These two teams had one of the more epic first round playoff battles last season, and now this season they meet for the third and final time in the regular season. Los Angeles and San Antonio have split both their previous matchups SU and ATS, each winning on their own court.

However, while the Clippers did blow out the Spurs in their most recent meeting right after the All Star Break, the Spurs were without both Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobli in that game. Ginobli was still out thanks to a scary injury that I can’t even mention without getting squeamish, and Leonard was nursing a calf injury that hadn’t quite heeled by the time the All Star Break ended.

This is huge for the game tonight, because while the Clipper had no issues scoring the ball against San Antonio in both games or the playoffs last season for that matter, the Spurs put up a dud without Leonard and Ginobli back in February.  San Antonio only scored 86 points in that road game, but tonight at home, and at full strength, San Antonio will almost surely be back on the top of their game.

That being said, I think we could once again see a higher scoring game between these two teams. With a total of only 200 points, it gives us some nice over potential between these two teams. Doc Rivers has said it before, and I agree, the Clippers matchup well with the Spurs, even without Blake Griffin in the lineup.

Tim Duncan has trouble keeping the very active and mobile, DeAndre Jordan off the glass, and it’s hard for the Spurs to stop him in the pick and roll. Considering that if Leonard would have played in their most recent game the Spurs would have been closer to 100 points, the over might have cashed in their last three meetings. The over was 4-3 in their seven game series last year, and I think we could see the over hit in this one, which is the lowest total these two teams have played with since earlier this season in San Antonio.

The Sharp Pick
The over is 6-4 for the Clippers this season when they play on the road as underdogs, and even though the Clippers tend to cash the over after a loss, LA is giving up 105 points per game in their last five games, so the Spurs might be able to cash the over still in this one, even if they bring their defense and keep LA in the low to mid 90s.

These two teams have cashed the over in 10 of their last 16 meetings dating back three seasons, and in four of their last six games dating back to last season’s playoffs. The over is also 4-3 in their last seven games against one another from San Antonio.

There is no denying that the Clippers play the Spurs well, and that is why I think they can overcome the odds tonight and get some points on the board. Chris Paul is a tough cover for the Spurs, and I’ve already mentioned LA’s pick and roll game with Paul and Jordan is tough for the Spurs to stop. If the Clippers can hit a few outside shots along with that tonight, it’s going to be a game where one or both teams are well into the 100s tonight. Back the over as your NBA pick and beat the NBA odds boards tonight.
