This is another in a long line of classic West vs. East matchups, featuring a short line on the road team. West vs. East is now 90-50 SU. In addition, NBA road chalk is a compelling 67-52 against the NBA odds spread.  With those numbers as a backdrop, let’s go inside the current form of these teams to isolate tonight’s winner.

Phoenix Suns vs. Charlotte Hornets 7:05 PM ET

Last year, the Charlotte Hornets had a breakout season going 43-43 SU. They were expected to become a winning team this season with Al Jefferson anchoring the middle, Kemba Walker manning the point, and the addition of Lance Stephenson on the wing. A 4-5 SU start showed promise.  Since that time, however, Charlotte has gone just 2-13 SU, averaging a league worst (92.5 PPG) in that timeframe.  Charlotte enters tonight on a 3-game losing streak. Their most recent outing was a 97-88 loss to Cleveland, in which they fell behind 21-0 in the 1st quarter. This team is just 5-8 SU at home with a record of 1-4 ATS as home dog. This team is a long way from looking like a playoff contender. A lone bright spot in the Hornets’ season was the 103-95 victory at Phoenix. That was their lone victory against Western Conference foes, against whom they stand 1-10 SU, including 0-6 SU on this floor. In short, this is a team we want no part of, as they are being outscored by 7.3 PPG, a negative margin surpassed by only the lowly 76ers and T-Wolves.

At first glance, it would appear that Phoenix would be a risky proposition tonight.  But, the combination of their recent losing streak and the revenge motive provides full focus. At this point in the season, that’s exactly what you want from the superior team. Last year, Phoenix was expected to have the worst record in the league.  They shocked the world with a 48-34 SU log, missing the playoffs by a single game.  This year, a 12-8 SU start looked most promising.  Yet, as they enter tonight’s action, they are on a 0-6 SU run.  The previous game was perhaps the most heartbreaking of all! The Suns dropped a 96-94 decision on their home court to Milwaukee, when the Bucks banked in a 3 pointer at the buzzer.

For my free NBA picks tonight, the combination of that brutal home loss, the 6-game losing streak and 103-95 revenge assures that Phoenix, the far superior team, brings their “A” game tonight against the struggling Hornets.  In so doing, they extend the series record to 6-1 SU in their favor.
