Orlando has been playing good ball, but can they continue their recent hot streak of covering the spread against Western Conference powers? Not if Aaron Gordon misses Wednesday's game vs. Portland.

One of those surprises has been the play of the Orlando Magic.

Coming off their impressive win over the Lakers on Sunday, the Magic nearly beat the wounded Warriors on Monday on the second night of a back-to-back. At a game under .500, I think it’s safe to say few people saw this kind of start for the Magic.

Their success has been due to Steve Clifford coming in and taking over for Frank Vogel. Clifford never got the credit for building up Kemba Walker in Charlotte, but now in Orlando he is flipping around a team that has for years suffered in obscurity since Dwight Howard left all those years ago.

This season the Magic are not darlings in offensive or defensive metrics. They just play soundly and efficiently on offense without turning the ball over. While they are allowing more than 110 points per 100 possessions this season, they play slow enough on offense and force a lot of turnovers, which in turn keeps them in the game longer against good teams.

That has led to a pretty positive ATS record on multiple fronts: 12-9 ATS overall and 6-3 ATS on the road. They are 8-5 ATS against the Eastern Conference, but just 4-4 ATS against the West.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

The Magic's loss to the Warriors did more than break the players' hearts. It also illustrated how important Aaron Gordon has been to Orlando. https://t.co/1CCOyciOOb
— Josh Robbins (@JoshuaBRobbins) November 27, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

The Sharp Pick

Jusuf Nurkic is dealing with a shoulder contusion, and while his presence is very important for the Blazers, with guys like Zach Collins, Meyers Leonard, and even Caleb Swanigan, they won’t be killed if he can’t suit up. His injury seems minor, though, so double check his status before making any bets on this one.

The big question mark and rally-killer in this game is Gordon. He left Orlando’s game on Monday with back stiffness, which is an issue he has dealt with before. In years prior where Orlando was not anywhere close to playoff contention, I would have guessed they would play it safe and hold Gordon out. They may be forced to if his back issue is serious, but if it’s not, I think Gordon can play.

The Magic have a lot of momentum right now both SU and ATS, while the Blazers have lost their last three games SU and ATS. Portland is obviously struggling, and if we can get a game where Gordon plays and Nurkic sits, this one favors Orlando on the road some. However, if Gordon sits, I’m laying off this play.

Final Score Prediction: Portland 114, Orlando 110
