Boston hopes to snap out of its funk against a New Orleans squad that also is struggling, having lost its last three. Let’s see which one of these ailing teams gets well in the Bayou in our NBA picks Monday.

Every time the C’s win, Boston fans breathe a collective sigh of relief as if whatever had ailed their beloved Green was somehow exorcised in victory and a torrid winning streak was about to emerge.

However, last season’s overachieving squad that reached the Eastern Conference Finals without their two top players, Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, have become the Washington Wizards of 2017-18, a .500 team sneaking in the backdoor of the playoffs as a No. 8 seed. But maybe, just maybe, they are playing like a .500 team because they are a .500 team. That’s hard to believe with all the talent Boston has assembled but this group is not clicking, and the only real difference between this year and last is one man, Gordon Hayward. But if you want to pin Boston’s struggles on the former All-Star then explain the 113-104 loss to the Mavericks on Saturday where Hayward sat with soreness to his surgically repaired ankle. The Green is losing with Hayward and without him, but Monday night should see him in uniform against the Pelicans.

Speaking of New Orleans, they are also a 10-10 team but their record is more in keeping with a team that has one enormously talented centerpiece and not much surrounding him. That jewel in the crown is Anthony Davis, who sat in the team’s 124-114 loss to the Wizards on Saturday night. Davis suffered a right hip injury in Friday's setback to the Knicks and his availability for Monday’s game is uncertain, which delayed the NBA odds board from issuing a line on this game.

Whether Davis plays or not, the Celtics should be able to exploit New Orleans’ sieve-like defense. The Pelicans are ranked 29th in points allowed, surrendering an average of 117.3 per game, while Boston ranks fourth in that category (104.2 PPG). Certainly, the Pelicans offense must be considered as what they lack on defense, they make up with on offense, but Boston has plenty of offensive talent of their own and with clean looks from the perimeter they should be able to score enough to outlast New Orleans in this one.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

“I’ll take that.” -@jaytatum0 pic.twitter.com/VqGrHhWZzj
— Boston Celtics (@celtics) November 25, 2018
\n\n"}[/]

Here are some trends to consider:

Pelicans are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

Pelicans are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS loss.

Pelicans are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Eastern Conference teams.

Pelicans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.

Pelicans are 0-8 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight-up loss.

The Celtics will get the Pelicans without their big man Davis, or will face the perennial All-Star at less than 100 percent. We like Boston’s chances to take advantage of this situation with tough defense and an offense that is bound to come alive sooner or later.
