The Magic have been close, yet that doesn’t do them much good as they enter Friday’s meeting with the Blazers on a 6-game losing streak. However, maybe it means they’ll be able to cover NBA odds.
The Portland Trail Blazers Can Win Because…
Orlando can’t get out of its own way these days. Yes, they’ve lost six in a row but that’s just the latest streak. Overall, they’ve lost 10 of 12 and have just six wins in their last 22 contests. While they might be capable of covering, chances are they aren’t winning this game. On the season, Orlando is just 11-22 at home, so don’t think that playing at home will necessarily give them any type of advantage. And while the Magic have lost six in a row, they have been mostly non-competitive in those outings as they’ve trailed by double-digits in four of those six losses.
On the season, Portland is 23-6 when facing a team with a losing record, which is why NBA odds made them a 7 point favorite tonight. They love to feast on bad defensive teams too as they are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 against teams allowing 99 points per game or more. This is just a mismatch and although Portland has lost two straight, they should get back on track here.
The Orlando Magic Can Win Because…
They’ve been getting better since Jacque Vaughn was fired. Interim head coach James Borrego has been able to get a little bit more out of this roster. They were 15-37 under Vaughn but are 6-12 under Borrego, which is a slight improvement. But the play on the court has been noticeably different too.
The Magic have lost six straight but they’ve been pretty close most of the way. They lost by six at Milwaukee, lost by seven at Boston and while they were blown off the map by the Cleveland Cavaliers, they still played Houston and Dallas very tight on the road.
That last game in Dallas should have this team very confident as all five starters scored in double figures. Also, point guard Elfrid Payton notched his first career triple-double.
Portland has lost two straight and three of their last four away games. Their latest three road losses have come at Miami, Washington and Minnesota. If those teams can beat Portland, then the Magic should be more than capable of covering seven points.
The Magic are a sizable home dog here and it doesn’t make a ton of sense to lay this type of number with Portland. Orlando finished up their road trip on a high note and as long as they aren’t lazy in their first game back, they should be very competitive here that is why we like them as our NBA pick for tonight's game.
For Portland, this is their fourth road game in six nights and it’s possible that they’re a bit wary too. Although the Blazers are a big favorite here, this game should be closer than most expect. Take the points.
