Dwight Howard Will Sign With The Lakers

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that Howard is on his way back to the Lakers. According to Charania: “Howard’s agent, Charles Briscoe of Briscoe Sports Group, has completed buyout with Grizzlies officials, and Howard will sign with the Lakers once he clears waivers, sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium”

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski: “Dwight Howard’s deal with the Lakers will be non-guaranteed, league source tells ESPN. Howard had several meetings with Lakers officials, and they’ll give him a chance to show he’s made changes in how he conducts himself. Lakers players were involved in process.”

The Lakers wanted to replace DeMarcus Cousins, who could miss all of next season. Cousins signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with them but he tore his ACL while working out in Las Vegas and it seems highly unlikely that he will suit up at all for the team this season because of the severity of his injury.

Los Angeles planned individual workouts to evaluate centers Dwight Howard, Joakim Noah and Mo Speights this week and Howard and Noah impressed them yesterday.

The Wizards traded Dwight Howard to the Grizzlies for CJ Miles after he played just nine games for them last season because of a persistent gluteal injury. Howard was productive when he was on the court, averaging 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in 25.6 minutes per game.

While those numbers may be way below his career averages of 17.4 points and 12.6 rebounds, they are still respectable stats and the Lakers are thin on frontcourt depth.

If healthy and focused, Dwight Howard can contribute. It seemed unlikely because of their history with each other but Howard’s reunion with the Lakers does make sense. Howard averaged 17.1 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 35.8 minutes over 76 games with the Lakers in the 2012-13 season but this time the team only needs him to stay healthy and produce for around 15-20 minutes a night.
