With Nicolas Batum out for the Hornets, things will be difficult for them tonight as they visit the San Antonio Spurs. Oddsmakers have noted this by making San Antonio a double-digit favorite.

Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte is coming off a very tough loss in Detroit but they are still one of the better teams in the Eastern conference in my opinion. Currently, they are averaging 105.8 points per game which ranks 11th in the league while shooting 44% from the floor. Offensively their statistics are not that great and they rank in the bottom half the league in most categories but they do move the ball very well averaging 23.5 assists per game which rank seventh in the league, and they hit the boards averaging 54.8 rebounds per game which rank them fifth.

It is on the other side of the ball is where I like them tonight so I will grab the points as Charlotte is one of the better defensive teams in the NBA. The Hornets are allowing opponents to shoot just 44.5% from the field which ranks seventh in the NBA, and they rank in the top 10 in most defensive categories. One issue that could plague them tonight though is the fact they do like to allow quite a bit of tempo. Despite that fact they should keep this game relatively close, and although I am hard-pressed to see them pull off any sort of upset they should stay within the number.

San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio continues to improve every game and by the end of the year, it looks like it will come down to them and Golden State in the Western Conference, as usual. San Antonio’s averaging 106.1 points per game and are shooting 47.9% from the field which ranks second in the NBA. What should have most of the league on notice so is the fact that the Spurs are starting to pick things up on the defensive side of the ball.

Currently, San Antonio ranks fifth in the NBA in opponent effective field-goal percentage and shooting efficiency as well as allowing opponents just 36.8 field goals made per game which ranks them fourth. As mentioned, I think it is pretty close to a lock that they win this game tonight but Charlotte is a very well coached team that has split with San Antonio the last two times they have matched up, and in their most recent contest back in November they lost by just five points. Expect another tough contest with San Antonio winning, but with Charlotte covering.

Charlotte Hornets vs San Antonio Spurs

Oddsmakers have come out making Charlotte a +11 underdog which makes sense with Batum out. However, for my NBA pick, I will back the Hornets to stay scrappy and stay within the number.
