Team USA will try to maintain superiority against Spain in the FIBA World Cup, but with most of its stars passing on the event, will Derrick Rose be able to make the US a viable betting pick?

The United States’ national men’s basketball team is preparing for the World Cup of Basketball, a major FIBA championship event later this summer in Spain. They’re attempting to maintain superiority against the Spaniards after having beaten Spain in each of the past two gold medal games at the Summer Olympics in 2008 and 2012. While that pursuit on the part of the Americans is obviously significant and will get a lot of attention, the biggest story in the Team USA bubble is Derrick Rose, who will be part of the team while other superstars rest and prepare for the NBA season.

What This Means For The Chicago Bulls
In the first day of practice for Team USA, Rose expressed just how confident he is after a couple of injury-plagued seasons. He garnered some headlines suggesting that his confidence is “through the roof”.

It’s only one day of practice but Rose did look physically stronger. Athletes don’t automatically regain a mindset defined by confidence and optimism after suffering two major injuries over the course of two NBA seasons that result in the loss of over 150 games played (not even including the playoffs). Rose has somehow managed to become very happy about his situation and at the moment, he doesn’t feel like a player with a damaged body. His lift and spring seem to be back to fairly normal pre-injury levels.

If this is what Rose looks like for the rest of the summer, the United States can beat Spain again. More importantly, though, if this is the kind of player Rose is for the full 2014-15 NBA season, the Bulls become an Eastern Conference contender. They would get back all the production, scoring and speed they were missing the past two seasons.

How To Bet The News
This is such a tough thing to process in terms of betting on the Bulls and the NBA in general for the full 2014-15 season. Does anyone really know if Rose will be playing 30, 50, or 70 games into the season? Not really. Does anyone know if he’ll be healthy for the playoffs? Maybe he’ll get through the summer with Team USA at the World Cup of Basketball, but when NBA games start in November and Rose is playing every other night, the strain of that workload could easily catch up with him. While he says he’s confident, no bettor can share that confidence when considering their 7/1 odds to win a championship. Yes, they are only 7/1. If you were getting maybe 15/1, then it’s worth a shot as the Bulls are capable as long as Rose stays healthy. At 7/1, it feels like there’s plenty of risk and little reward.

The bottom line is you don’t want to put too much stock into this Rose practice session as a betting indicator. It’s good news for Team USA. You might want to consider betting on Team USA to an extent not felt a week ago. As far as NBA betting goes, you don’t want to change the way you bet on the Chicago Bulls just yet – especially with the Kevin Love  situation still unresolved.
