Dallas is tanking away its season and thus holding out players who could give them a shot to win games. Tonight at New Orleans, that player is guard Dennis Smith Jr.

I see them easily taking care of unmotivated Dallas tonight, but that’s not saying much with the Pelicans -9 home favorites on the NBA odds board.

However, the total of 219 points looks to be a better wager. If the Mavericks play defense like they did in their past two games, this one is going way "over" the posted total.

The Mavs allowed 122 and 114 points in their last two games, and they have given up nearly 111 points per game over their past eight on the road.

Going against an offense that is playing fast and tough, the Mavericks stand little to no chance of slowing New Orleans. The Pelicans have put up 120 or more points in their last two games against the Mavs, and while they are in a bit of a slump offensively, their last four or five opponents have tough defenses.

The Mavs, on the other hand, have a defensive rating of 110.5 on the road since the All-Star break. If we can bank on 110 to 120 points from New Orleans tonight, I see the Mavs’ offense playing well enough to help us cash the "over" with our NBA picks.
