Just last week, Phoenix took care of business handing the Dallas Mavericks a home loss. For Thursday, oddsmakers have come out making that same Dallas team a small favorite as the Mavs take on the Suns in Mexico City. Is there value in backing Dallas?

Dallas Mavericks

Starting with that Phoenix loss Dallas has now lost three games in a row but has had a little time to rest off of their recent road trip to Minnesota. Although they have been less than stellar this entire season over the last few weeks we have seen a more competitive Mavericks team and I expect for them to come out of this game with a neutral-site win. Dallas is averaging just 95.1 points per game while averaging just 35.3 field goals made, both statistics ranking them last in the NBA. They just do not get up and down the floor very well ranking last in the league also in fast-break points per game and second to last in field goals attempted per game. That being said, though, this pace has helped them to at least keep teams in check somewhat allowing 100.7 points per game ranking them fifth in the NBA. Percentagewise their defensive numbers are not that great so this will come down to who controls the tempo. Phoenix wants to get up and down the floor but I’m anticipating for Dallas to not allow this game to turn into a track meet.

 Phoenix Suns

Phoenix is averaging 105.9 points per game and averaging 39.3 field goals made for game ranking them 11th and 12th respectively in the NBA. This is really a conflict of styles as Phoenix really likes to push tempo averaging 88.3 it tempts per game which ranks them second in the NBA. I believe this type of pace will be tough to uphold tonight however against the Dallas team that allows just 77.1 field goals attempts per game and ranks first in the NBA in that category. Despite their tempo Phoenix’s offensive shooting percentages are not that great at just 44.5% overall and 34.3% from distance which ranks 20th and 24th in the NBA respectively. On the other side of the ball their defensive percentages are about the same as Dallas, in that they are not very good. However, what Phoenix allows on top of those poor percentages is a very porous scoring defense as opponents are averaging 111.9 points per game against them ranking them second to last in the NBA.

 NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have come out making Dallas a 1-point favorite. The Mavs are technically the road team for this trip south of the border but there's clearly no home-court advantage for the Suns. Both of these teams are not having good seasons, and this doesn’t set up to be exactly a playoff-like atmosphere. For my NBA pick, I will take Dallas because I believe the Mavs are a little bit better than the Suns overall.
