For today’s NBA breakdown we head to the Eastern Conference where Washington travels to take on Charlotte, and Brooklyn visits Cleveland. On closer examination, it seems like we will have one game that goes under and the other that goes over.

Washington vs Charlotte

Oddsmakers have come out with what I think is a pretty surprisingly low total for this matchup considering the tempo that Charlotte allows. For my NBA pick, however, I’m going to back under the total when these two meet in Charlotte. On the season Charlotte has been one of the better defensive teams in the league currently ranking fifth and sixth in opponent overall shooting and opponent shooting efficiency respectively.

On the other end, Washington which usually doesn’t play much defense has been good statistically allowing opponents to shoot just 33% from distance ranking them fifth in the NBA. Washington also ranks eighth in opponent shooting efficiency and they have been decent allowing opponents to shoot just 45% overall ranking them 11th in the NBA. For me this really comes down to tempo and although Charlotte does allow teams to get up-and-down both the Hornets and the Wizards don’t get up that many attempts per game ranking in the bottom third in that category. Expect this game to stay just under the total.

 Brooklyn vs Cleveland

Earlier in the season Brooklyn hosted and beat Cleveland at home 112-107 which stayed under the total of 224. Be that as it may, the books came out with a higher total for this matchup. For my NBA pick, I expect them to go over this total. This sets up to be an absolute track meet with Brooklyn getting up 89.7 attempts per game and allowing 90.3 attempts per game ranking them first and 27th in the league respectively. Brooklyn also has been terrible overall defensively and they allow 42.1 opponent field goals made per game which ranks them last in the NBA. This suits Cleveland just fine as they allow opponents to get up 87.7 attempts per game ranking them in the bottom third of the league, and they are still more of an offensive of heavy team as opposed to a defensive lockdown team.

Currently, Cleveland ranks fourth, fifth, and sixth, in the NBA in shooting efficiency, overall shooting percentage, and two-point shooting percentage. Brooklyn should be able to score as well against this Cleveland defense that ranks in the bottom five in pretty much every defensive category.
