The Celtics hope to clinch the series and sweep the 76ers right out of the postseason on Monday night. Let’s check out the NBA odds board to see if the Celtics are worth backing again.

What’s Trending

  • Philadelphia is 6-11 ATS off an upset loss as a favorite.
  • Philadelphia is 7-12 ATS vs. division opponents.
  • Philadelphia is 1-6 ATS vs. Celtics this season.
  • Boston is 13-4 ATS after a division game.
  • Boston is 14-2 ATS off an upset win as an underdog.
  • Boston is 35-17 ATS versus good offensive teams - scoring 106+ points per game.

I don’t want to be the guy who says, “I told you so”, but I have been telling my readers to include the Celtics in their NBA picks throughout each game of this series and I was never more emphatic than I was in Game 3. Here’s what I wrote before the Celtics thrilling 101-98 overtime victory on Saturday where they were installed as 9 ½ point underdogs.

A quick check of the NBA odds board has rendered me incredulous. The oddsmakers had the wrong favorite in the first two games and they are hanging Philly -9½ as though those games didn’t happen. Well, they did and I understand the value of home-court advantage in the NBA while also factoring in the 76ers desperation to win this pivotal Game 3. However, shouldn’t the number be something along the lines of Philadelphia -6?

And the irony is that Philly couldn’t even cover the six because they lost the game outright! The Celtics have Philly’s number this season having gone 6-1 straight up and against the spread. The Sixers are being carried on the broad shoulders of Joel Embiid who has shown up in each and every game. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of his teammates, particularly Ben Simmons, who has had rookie lapses at the worst possible times, including a soul-sucking Game 3 turnover near the end of the overtime frame which led to a pair of free throws from the Celtics Al Horford to seal the deal and put Boston up 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.

After checking the NBA odds board for Monday night’s Game 4 clash, it appears the oddsmakers are heeding my advice and hanging Philadelphia -6 ½ which is a half-point removed from where I believed the number should have been in Game 3. BetPhoenix is one of those online sportsbooks dealing that number and, by the way, are also offering a terrific 175% Free Play Sports Bonus on cash deposits of $300 or more. Although 6 ½ is a much more reasonable number, I am still not convinced that the 76ers have the maturity to defeat this spectacularly gritty and determined Celtics’ squad.

Philadelphia may have Embiid and Simmons but Boston has their own talented youngsters in Jason Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier coupled with a defensive wizard in Marcus Smart and a five-time All-Star in Al Horford. Yeah, I’ll take my chances with that crew and can you imagine the juggernaut Boston would be if they had their two best players in uniform with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward?! It doesn’t matter because the Celtics are doing just fine without them and should close out the series on Monday night but we will take the 6 ½ points just in case. Go Green!
