The Cavaliers couldn't make a trade to move shooting guard JR Smith in recent months but he will have a new home soon because the team waived him yesterday.

Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor explained that the Cavaliers waived Smith before his $15.6 million contract for next season became guaranteed. The Cavs were unable to find the right trade for Smith, even after he agreed to extend his guarantee date from June 30 to July 15.

The team still had the option to extend the full guarantee date on Smith's contract another two weeks, to August 1, but a source said the Cavaliers thought it was unlikely to trade him right now, with many teams already having cleared salary space other ways.

Cleveland.com also reported that Smith's remaining $4.3 million in guaranteed money will be stretched over the next three years.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/ST3B4ZzOaUM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>"}[/]

The Rockets, Heat and Warriors are some of the potential landing spots for Smith. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers are an "unlikely destination" currently.

Adding JR Smith would help the Rockets improve their second unit scoring because he is capable of knocking down outside shots. After acquiring Russell Westbrook via trade, they have one of the best backcourts in the NBA and having another scorer off the bench would be a welcomed addition.

Smith would also provide a nice spark off the bench for a Heat team that has an interesting roster loaded with a mixture of young big men and scorers.

The Warriors can be a surprise destination for Smith if there's mutual interest. The team is going through a bit of a mini-rebuild currently but they can still contend in the Western Conference and Smith would see decent minutes off the bench and help improve their depth.

Houston Rockets Regular Season Wins in 2019-20
(Courtesy of BetOnline)

Over 51.5 wins -120

Under 51.5 wins -105

Miami Heat Regular Season Wins in 2019-20

Over 42.5 wins -110

Under 42.5 wins -110

Golden State Warriors Regular Season Wins in 2019-20

Over 47.5 wins -130

Under 47.5 wins +110
