The Cavaliers sit atop the Eastern Conference, winning four of their last five, while the Nets are mired in the cellar with one of the worst records in the league. Let’s review the NBA odds and cash a ticket tonight.

Cleveland Cavaliers (51-20 SU, 32-38-1 ATS)
Though on paper the Cavaliers look poised to enter the homestretch of the season on a roll, those who have included them in their NBA picks will tell you a different tale. Cleveland has won four of their last five but they have been poison for bettors who have watched LeBron’s crew fail to cover the NBA odds in five of their last six contests and have yielded a negative return on the year with a 32-38-1 ATS record. The Cavs are currently 9th in scoring averaging 104.0 points per game while their defense is amongst the best allowing only 97.9 PPG good for 3rd in the league.

Last night the team welcomed the Milwaukee Bucks to the Quicken Loans Arena and was installed as 11 ½ point home chalk. Yet once again the Cavaliers put a W on their record with a 113-104 decision but failed to cover the number for their backers. LeBron James led all scorers with 26 points while Kevin Love came back strong after missing Cleveland’s previous game against Denver. Love had 24 points and 10 rebounds while birthday boy Kyrie Irving flirted with a triple double posting 16 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

Brooklyn Nets (19-51 SU, 35-35 ATS)
The Nets have dropped seven of their last eight and the season’s end cannot come soon enough. To make matters worse for Nets’ fans, the team traded away this year’s first-round pick, as well as first-rounders in the following two drafts, to the Celtics in exchange for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in what seems like many moons ago. Certainly Brooklyn would love to have those picks back, and particularly this year’s that is destined to be of the lottery variety.

In their last outing on Tuesday night the team returned home after two road losses, and failed ATS covers, to Chicago and Detroit. The home cooking was not enough to get the Nets a rare win as the Charlotte Hornets dribbled out of Brooklyn with a 105-100 victory. However, the Nets did manage to cover the spread in that one as six-point home underdogs. A big night by Brook Lopez (29 points) and a career-high for Sean Kilpatrick (25 points) was all for naught as the Nets suffered their 51st loss of the season with only 12 games remaining.

Betting Analysis
Not surprisingly the Cavaliers have won both meetings with Brooklyn thus far, starting with a 90-88 win in Cleveland back in November as nine-point home favorites. They met again, only this time in Brooklyn, where the Cavs delivered a 91-78 beatdown and this time covered the number, ever so narrowly, as 12 ½ point road chalk.

Before we just blindly back the better team which is of course Cleveland we must understand that the Cavs have not been kind to their financial backers this season while the Nets have been able to tread water at 35-35 ATS on the season. Yet, while I am always tepid about betting road favorites the line looks surprisingly tasty here. Of course the reason for the relatively small number is the fact that the Cavs were in action last night in Milwaukee. However, the Cavs are clicking as the playoffs loom and are capable of playing some of the best defense in the league. Meanwhile the Nets are 27th in points scored while 22nd in points allowed. That should be enough for the Cavs to get this win by double digits against a team that is going nowhere fast while Cleveland wants to distance themselves from second seed Toronto in the Eastern Conference standings.

Cleveland is 5-1 ATS in their last six Thursday games.

Brooklyn is 0-4 ATS in their last four versus Central Division opponents.

Brooklyn is 1-5 ATS in their last six home games versus a team with a winning record.
