Golden St. Warriors (-3) at Cleveland Cavaliers 9:00 ET ABC TV
Game 4 of the NBA Playoff Championship Round resumes Thursday night with Golden St. and Cleveland again squaring off at Quicken Loans Arena at 9:00 ET on ABC TV. Game 3 was won by Cleveland (96-91). It was a game that was very similar to the Game 2 Cleveland win by a score of 95-93. In that contest, Golden St. trailed by 11 points with 3 minutes remaining before the Warriors rallied on their strong home court to send the game to OT before Cleveland prevailed. Game 3 saw Cleveland hold a dominant 17 point lead early in the 4th quarter. This time the Warriors fell short with a 96-91 defeat.
The way the 2 games played out was much the same. On the offensive end, Cleveland was led by LeBron James, who recorded triple doubles in both contests. Perhaps more important was the leadership of James as he virtually willed his teammates to victory in each contest. On the defensive side of the floor, where championships are won more often than not, Cleveland has clearly been the more intense team. It has badly disrupted the offensive rhythm of the Warriors who need to find a rhythm in the open court to be successful.
If the Warriors are to remain competitive in this series, they will need to make major adjustments. Primarily, they will need to be a more intense defensive effort. Along with holding down the scoring of the Cavs, a better defensive effort will also trigger points in the open court for Golden St.
There is no guarantee that will happen of course. The NBA odds clearly suggest that the Warriors are the superior team without Irving and Love in the lineup for Cleveland. The way in which Games 2 and 3 played out, however, implies they are virtually even. Despite the greater motivation from Golden St. following consecutive defeats, this is a definitive overlay on the part of the linemaker that Warriors will make the necessary adjustments. That is far from true leaving all the value with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team who is 48-12 SU since late January. Unless the Warriors are able to put this game into the open court and free their 3-point shooters, Curry and Thompson for open looks, the results of this game could be very similar to each of the last two. If you are suiting up, add the Cleveland Cavaliers to your NBA picks as home underdog!
