Per Jake Fischer, NBA producer/reporter for Sports Illustrated, Carmelo Anthony and Hasheem Thabeet will unofficially scrimmage with the Knicks.
“In addition to Hasheem Thabeet, Carmelo Anthony is expected to join the New York Knicks’ informal 5-on-5 scrimmages at Columbia University this morning, according to league sources.”
This is not the first time that Anthony practices for an NBA team in this offseason. The free agent forward had an early morning workout with LeBron James and Chris Paul on August 9 and he also participated in informal team workouts and scrimmages with Nets players in Los Angeles two weeks ago.
Anthony has had a great career, averaging 24.0 points in 1064 games (1056 starts) with the Nuggets, Knicks, Thunder and Rockets but he hasn’t played in an NBA game since November 11, 2018 against the Thunder when he scored just two points on 1-for-11 from the field (9.1 percent) and pulled down five rebounds over 20 minutes.
The 10-time NBA All-Star signed a $2.4 million veteran’s minimum deal with the Rockets last year and played in just 10 games for them before being traded to the Bulls for the draft rights of Tadija Dragievi. He never played a game for the Bulls and was released in January.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Knicks had considered signing Anthony but only if they added two marquee free agents and when they missed out on Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant their interest in Anthony waned.
Melo averaged 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game with the Rockets and while he looked great at Chris Brickley’s Black Ops Basketball Run, teams seem to have given up on him because of the idea that he is not willing to have a reduced role, which is not true. He appeared on ESPN’s First Take on August 2 and said:
“It strikes me that I’m not on a roster due to my talent, due to my skill. You’re telling me there’s 30 teams in the NBA, and I can’t make a 15-man roster … 1,000 percent [I can accept a lesser role]. I can do that.
I had to do that, I wasn’t willing to do that in Houston because that wasn’t what was relayed to me. It was, you are the piece that we need.”
Hasheem Thabeet, the No. 2 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, has been out of the league since 2013-14 but the 32-year-old center has spent the last few years preparing to come back to the league. Ian Begley of SNY.tv said that Thabeet has practiced with the Knicks for the past few days.
Thabeet has averaged just 2.2 points in 10.5 minutes over 224 games (20 starts) in five seasons with the Grizzlies, Rockets, Trail Blazers and Thunder.
The Knicks have 15 players on guaranteed deals, so sources say not to read too much into Anthony and Thabeet working out with the Knicks. A more serious commitment with the Knicks might not be coming but there is at least fringe interest in the two players and other NBA teams might monitor this scrimmage. I hope someone gives them a chance.
