The Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies have both cooled off of late. It’s likely that the Christmas break came at the right time for both teams as it gives them a chance to regroup. They’ll meet on Friday and the Grizzlies are the favorite on the NBA betting lines.
The Houston Rockets Can Win Because…
They’ll get a boost in their lineup with the addition of Josh Smith. Whether he plays or not on Friday is still to be determined but just the fact that the team made this move is going to give the players on the court a boost.
The Grizzlies are struggling right now as they’ve seemingly lost their way. They lost at home to the Chicago Bulls last Friday, which is fine, but then they also lost in Cleveland on Sunday and completely messed things up with a home loss to Utah on Monday. That’s ugly. Now they’ve lost three straight and can’t seem to figure things out. The difference here should be the Rockets defense as they’re still playing great while the Grizzlies have coughed up 102 points per game in their last three.
The Memphis Grizzlies Can Win Because…
They’ve already crushed the Rockets once this season. They know what they have to do to get the job done. The Rockets came for a visit on November 17th and it was billed as a showdown of the top teams in the Western Conference. However, the Grizzlies mopped the floor with the Rockets, crushing them 119-93. They match up quite well with them and although the addition of Smith adds a new dynamic, the truth is that Smith has always been a square peg being forced into a round hole in the NBA and his talent surpasses what he really brings to an NBA team. The fact that the Rockets plan to start him right off the bat could mess up their chemistry and throw off their offense.
The Grizzlies did have a rough week with three straight losses but it is defendable. They lost to the East’s best two teams – both of whom are quite hot right now – and then they came home and were half asleep against the Jazz and it cost them. They’ll be focused of this game as they’ve been a great team all season and will now have a chance to regroup. They’ve only lost three times at home all season long; it would be unreasonable to think that they lose three straight at home.
Coming off a pair of home losses, it’s tough to bet against Memphis here. The Rockets did get Smith but it may take some time to ease him into the lineup. And with Memphis already showing once that they have Houston’s number, they’re a good bet to do it again – especially in a spot where they really a win to get back on track. Take the Grizzlies with your NBA picks in this one.
