Arguably the best matchup of the night takes place in Atlanta when the Hawks host the Boston Celtics. Oddsmakers have come out making Atlanta a small home favorite in this battle of two the best teams in the Eastern conference. Who will move ahead in the standings tonight?

Boston Celtics

Boston has won four out of their last five games and 11 out of their last 14 making them one of the hottest teams in basketball. Atlanta has been no slouch either but I like how Boston matches up with them and I look for them to not only cover but to pull off a key road win. On the season the Celtics are averaging 107 points per game which ranks them eighth in the NBA. Offensively across the board, they’ve really pick things up and currently they rank ninth in the league in both shooting efficiency and effective goal percentage along with hitting 37% of their shots from distance which ranks them seventh. Much like Atlanta, they are a very unselfish team averaging 24.9 assists per game which ranks them third in the NBA. On the other side the ball they have been better than last season and currently highlighted by allowing opponents just 44.9% from the floor which ranks them 12th in the league. This is definitely a tough spot for them considering Atlanta is well coached and playing at home but I think there is value in backing the road team tonight.

Atlanta Hawks

Like Boston, Atlanta has been red-hot these last couple weeks and are currently on a seven-game winning streak. I was impressed by their overtime win versus San Antonio but since that game, the next four have been against less impressive opponents beating Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas, and Brooklyn. Statistically, Atlanta has been decent on the offensive side of the ball but they still are only knocking down 33.9% of their shots from distance with ranks 25th in the league, and they currently rank 20th in the NBA in shooting efficiency. Defensively they had been good but not great and I believe the point of contention tonight will be the fact that they allow opponents to shoot almost 36% from distance. This could spell disaster against a really good Boston team that loves to shoot the ball from range. Despite their solid winning streak and my respect for head coach Mike Budenholzer, I believe that streak ends tonight against a Boston team on the rise.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have made Atlanta a -2.5 favorite across the board but for my NBA pick, I will fade them and back Boston tonight plus the points. Don’t be surprised if the Celtics come in and stop Atlanta’s current winning streak.
