By the Numbers is a daily NBA column featuring Swinger’s top selections according to historical trends and game time matchups. Let’s review this opening night matchup between the Eastern Conference's top teams last season.

Celtics (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) vs. Cavs (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS)

* Cleveland is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games as a home favorite.

* Cleveland is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.

* Cleveland is 18-37 ATS in their last 55 games as a home favorite of 0.5-4.5.

* Boston is 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.

* Boston is 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games as an underdog of 0.5-4.5.

* Boston is 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven games as a road underdog of 0.5-4.5.

Let's face it, the numbers above don't mean much because these teams have been severely reconstructed in the offseason. Sure the Cavaliers still have LeBron and the Celtics still have...Al Horford...but the verdict is out regarding how these clubs fit their shiny new toys into their respective rotations.

The choice is not really about which team is ready because they've had the entire offseason to think about this game tonight. It's certainly not about how the teams matchup based on what they've done recently because we haven't seen either new iteration in action that counts. No, your choice as to which side to bet on Tuesday night is predicated entirely on which team you believe got better in the offseason. The Cavaliers were better than the Celtics last season and proved it in the Eastern Conference Finals with a relatively easy 4-1 series victory.

But now the Celtics have Kyrie Irving while the Cavs have Isaiah Thomas. That's a clear win for the Green. The Celtics also have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 draft with a boatload of potential in Jayson Tatum who should be in the starting lineup due to new arrival Marcus Morris's sore knee which will keep him on the shelf for the next week. Boston also wooed All-Star forward Gordon Hayward into the fold and have essentially elevated the talent on this roster to a substantial degree.

As of this Monday morning writing, a full 36 hours before tip-off, the NBA odds across the board have the visitors as 3 to 3 ½ point road dogs depending on where you shop for your NBA picks. I say Boston got better than they were last season while Cleveland has dealt a top-five player in return for a top 20 player. Let's back the Celtics in the season opener, grab the points and watch a power shift begin in the Eastern Conference.
