By the Numbers is a daily NBA column featuring Swinger’s top selections according to historical trends and game time matchups. Let’s review the top picks for Friday’s slate and cash in our NBA picks.

Hawks (40-38 SU, 36-42 ATS) vs. Cavaliers (51-27 SU, 35-40-3 ATS)
  • Cleveland is 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up win.

  • Cleveland is 1-4 ATS in their last five games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.

  • Cleveland is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 when their opponent scores 100 points or more in their previous game.

  • Cleveland is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.

  • Atlanta is 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games vs. a team with a home winning percentage of greater than .600.

  • Atlanta is 4-0 ATS in their last four games as a road underdog of 11.0 or greater.

  • Atlanta is 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games as a road underdog.

  • Atlanta is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

The Hawks are coming off a big win last night after defeating the Celtics 123-116 in Boston. Yet, the NBA odds makers are giving Atlanta a big head start in this game simply because they are playing the defending world champs in their own backyard and are doing it on the second night of back-to-backs. The public will be falling all over themselves to lay the lumber as the squares have a penchant for big favorites at home. However, Atlanta has acquitted themselves quite well on zero days’ rest as evidenced by their 14-6 ATS mark over their last 20 games in such a scenario. Moreover, the Hawks defeated the Cavs 110-106 in their last meeting in Cleveland and should hang tough tonight courtesy of a double digit gift by the oddsmakers.

Timberwolves (31-47 SU, 35-43 ATS) vs. Jazz (48-30 SU, 34-40-4 ATS)
  • Utah is 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games.

  • Utah is 4-1 ATS in their last five games vs. a team with a winning percentage below .400.

  • Utah is 4-0 ATS in their last four games as a favorite.

  • Utah is 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite of 5.0-10.5.

  • Minnesota is 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up loss.

  • Minnesota is 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS loss.

  • Minnesota is 1-8 ATS in their last nine road games.

  • Minnesota is 1-6 ATS in their last seven road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

It appears as though George Hill will not be going again tonight for the Jazz tonight as he is still recuperating from a strained groin but Derrick Favors may indeed make a return after a 14-game absence with a bone bruise to his knee. Nevertheless, the Jazz have defeated and covered the number in two of their last three meetings with the Wolves in games played at Salt Lake and Minnesota is playing the second of back-to-back games after suffering a 105-98 loss to Portland last night.  We believe Utah will deliver another ATS winner for all those who back them in their NBA picks tonight.
