1st Round Western Conference Winners

#1 Golden State defeats #8 Portland (4-0)

The oddsmakers will not make it painless to place a series bet on the Warriors in what appears will be a first round destruction of the Trail Blazers. You better believe the lumber you will have to lay will hardly make it worth the risk considering nothing is a sure thing. But perhaps you can gain a palatable number for Golden State to sweep in your NBA picks. The one caveat is that though the Warriors swept the season series, the Blazers did cover the number in the final two contests. GSW should win this series in a cakewalk but don’t be surprised if Portland hangs tough enough to get a cover in a few of these first-round games.

#7 Memphis defeats #2 San Antonio (4-3)

I hear you laughing out there but don’t let this apparent mismatch fool you. The Grizzlies split the season series with the Spurs and covered all four contests. San Antonio was in a tailspin to end the regular season, losing outright and failing to cover the all-important number in four of their last five games. I will confess the Grizzlies did a similar fast fade at the end of the season but this appears to be a scenario where one team simply matches up well against another. As long as we are getting a generous bang for our gambling buck with Memphis, the Grizzlies are worth a wager for the upset.

#3 Houston defeats #6 Oklahoma City (4-3)

The Rockets defeated the Thunder in three of four (2-1-1 ATS) and won a 137-125 shootout in Houston in their last meeting. Of course, OKC’s Russell Westbrook is a one-man wrecking crew and could spur the upset but James Harden and his band of Houston brothers will have something to say about that. Watch the Rockets launch in a hard fought opening series.

#4 LA Clippers defeat #5 Utah (4-1)

The Clippers are steamrolling into the playoffs, winning seven straight and covering in five of those contests. LA defeated the Jazz in three of four of their meetings this season and won by double digits in all three victories. Utah knocked off Golden State and San Antonio to end the season but those victories were against inferior versions of the Warriors and Spurs that had already solidified their playoff seedings and were not maximizing their best lineups. Expect the Jazz to be singing the blues after this one is through.
