Golden State has steamrolled through the postseason and will now face the defending world champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Let’s review the historical trends, matchups and NBA odds as we determine who will be the next NBA champions.

Cavaliers (63-32 SU, 43-47-5 ATS) vs. Warriors (79-15 SU, 48-43-3 ATS)
  • Golden State is 17-8 ATS in their last 25 Thursday games.

  • Golden State is 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 games as a favorite.

  • Golden State is 35-15-1 ATS in their last 51 games as a favorite of 5.0-10.5.

  • Golden State is 20-7 ATS in their last 27 playoff games as a favorite of 5.0-10.5.

  • Cleveland is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games as a road underdog of 5.0-10.5.

  • Cleveland is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games after scoring more than 125 points in their previous game.

  • Cleveland is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog.

  • Cleveland is 2-5 ATS in their last seven playoff games as an underdog.

The NBA regular season proved to be nothing more than a coronation of the two best teams on the planet. And the fact that Cleveland was so superior to every club but the one they will be meeting in the NBA Finals, yet failed to gain the No. 1 seed in the East, ceding that distinction to the Boston Celtics, gives me cause for pause. The Cavaliers, unlike the Warriors, have at times this season become seemingly disinterested and disconnected in their pursuit of glory. Cleveland made little effort to wrest the home-court advantage from the Celtics at the end of the regular season and that insouciance could spell disaster if it rears its head against the best in the West.

The NBA odds reflect that the Golden State Warriors are sizeable favorites to reclaim the title they lost to LeBron and company last season. As of this writing, the Warriors are -275 favorites and have home court advantage in this one. Golden State is 7-3 straight up and 6-4 ATS against the Cavaliers in games played at the Oracle Arena over the past three seasons. The teams split the season series, with the Cavaliers narrowly edging the Warriors 109-108 in Cleveland while the Warriors returned the favor with a 126-91 decimation in their last meeting which was held at Golden State on January 16th. Now that Kevin Durant is back from injury the only issue the Warriors have is that there is only one basketball amongst a bevy of superstars. Lay the lumber and grab the favorite in your NBA picks for the 2016-2017 championship series.
