By the Numbers is an NBA column that runs each and every Sunday, focusing on historical trends, game time matchups and the prevailing NBA odds. We use all that information to deliver two premium plays, so let's see what we have this week!

Jazz (16-23 SU, 19-20 ATS) vs. Heat (21-17 SU, 16-20-2 ATS)

* Miami is 6-2 ATS in their last eight after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

* Miami is 5-1 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.

* Miami is 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite of 0.5-4.5.

* Utah is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up loss.

* Utah is 1-4 ATS in their last five games as a favorite of 0.5-4.5.

* Utah is 0-5 ATS in their last five road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

The Miami Heat have been playing their best basketball of the season with four wins over their last five outings and ATS covers in three of those five. Miami has had just one letdown recently and that was their 111-87 loss to the Nets on December 29th but this uptick in performance dates as far back as December 11th when they defeated those same Nets 101-89. The Heat have gone 10-4 straight up and 8-6 against the spread since that time. No, this is not the stuff of legends but for this edition of the Miami Heat, it's pretty good stuff.

Conversely, the Jazz have lost 12 of their last 15 straight up and are 6-9 ATS during that span. Utah lost its first meeting to Miami this season in an 84-74 defensive battle and shot just 33.8 percent from the floor. Both teams are similar in that they are solid defensively but struggle offensively. However, Utah is just 3-16 straight up and 6-13 ATS on the road this season and trending in the wrong direction while Miami is doing just the opposite. The NBA odds are reflecting the Heat as 4 ½ point favorites pretty much across the board except at one shop, YouWager, that is dealing the home chalk at -4, proving once again that it pays to shop around. Let's grab that hook to our advantage and include Miami in our NBA picks.

Hawks (10-28 SU, 20-16-2 ATS) vs. Lakers (11-27 SU, 17-21 ATS)

* Los Angeles is 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up loss.

* Los Angeles is 0-6 ATS in their last six home games.

* Los Angeles is 0-4 ATS in their last four home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

* Atlanta is 6-0 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss.

* Atlanta is 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points.

* Atlanta is 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games as an underdog.

Here we have a meeting of the league's worst teams out to prove which of the two stinks the least. Although I ordinarily wouldn't recommend throwing good money after bad teams, the Atlanta Hawks have proven that they may be losing in the standings but cashing at the windows. Entering this contest Atlanta has covered in 20 of 38 opportunities with two pushes included. That's a positive return on investment and against a team that has lost nine straight and is 2-7 ATS over that span like their opponents tonight, I love the fact they are actually getting points. In addition, there are serious trends (see above) that are also imploring you to bet the road pup here.

Free NBA Pick: Hawks +3 ½
