By the Numbers is a Sunday NBA column featuring two top selections based on historical trends and game time matchups. Let’s review the top picks for Sunday's action and cash in our NBA picks.

Hawks (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) vs. Nets (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

* Brooklyn is 13-4 ATS in their last 17 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

* Brooklyn is 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.

* Brooklyn is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games playing on one day's rest.

* Atlanta is 3-6 SU in its last nine games.

* Atlanta is 2-4 ATS in its last six games when playing Brooklyn

* Atlanta is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games as a road favorite.

The Nets have been a perennial cellar dweller but this year they will make a leap forward. This year's iteration of Brooklyn's NBA entry may not be playoff bound but they are certainly better than their recent predecessors, which is a low bar to be sure, but an improvement nonetheless.

After bowing to the Pacers in their season opener by the score of 140-131, Brooklyn rebounded Friday night with a 126-121 victory over the Magic and had six players in double-digits. Of course the Nets will be without starting guard Jeremy Lin but his absence did not stop them from defeating Orlando and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a repeat of the last meeting in April between these clubs when the Nets defeated the Hawks 91-82 as three-point home dogs. Let's back the home team in our NBA picks on Sunday afternoon.

Pelicans (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) vs. Lakers (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS)

* Los Angeles is 5-1 ATS in their last six after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game.

* Los Angeles is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400.

* Los Angeles is 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.

* New Orleans is 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up loss.

* New Orleans is 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.

* New Orleans is 1-6 ATS in their last seven when their opponent allows 100 points or more in their previous game.

It will be interesting to see how the NBA odds makers adjust to this new-look Lakers squad. Lonzo Ball came within inches of being the youngest player in the league's history to get the sacred triple-double in LA's 132-130 road win over the Suns on Friday night. This should be a fun season in La La and will soothe the wounds that have yet to heal since Kobe's retirement.

I like the Lakers in this matchup as the Pelicans are coming off consecutive losses to Memphis and Golden State to begin the season and will get a different kind of Lakers team than they faced last season. Speaking of last season, LA will hope to atone for their last meeting with New Orleans when they fell 105-97 as 6 ½ point home dogs. This is a new year and a new Lakers' team so let's back the home pups here.
