The NBA’s trouble with high-profile players suffering bad injuries might have continued on Friday with Jimmy Butler going down with what looked like a significant knee injury. There is now word yet on the severity, but there is almost no chance he plays on Saturday.

While it certainly wasn’t exactly like most season-ending non-contact knee injuries, Butler’s injury certainly didn’t look good. The video below shows him battling for a loose ball, before grabbing it and trying to plant his leg for a shot or pass.

It’s unfortunate for the Wolves that Butler went down like that, but hopefully nothing is structurally wrong with his knee. It’s disappointing from a general fan perspective as much as the Minnesota fans are holding their breath right now. Butler’s revenge game against the Bulls tonight might have been a huge performance.

Now the Wolves are going to likely have to deal without him for tonight and possible much longer than that. Without Butler on the court the Wolves’ offense takes a hit, but it likely won’t be noticeable in this matchup against the lowly Bulls.
However, the biggest hit they take is on defense. According to Basketball Reference, with Butler off the court this season, the Wolves are giving up 118.4 points per 100 possessions.

Chicago’s offense is nothing to fear, but they are good enough to take advantage of a tired Wolves defense without their best wing defender. The Bulls have already upset the Wolves once this season, and they might be able to do it again tonight.

However, the over seems to be the much better play with the total sitting at 217 ½. The Bulls are giving up 113 points per game on the road this season, and the Wolves should still get every bit of that tonight at home. All it takes is for the Wolves’ defense to not show up tonight on the back-to-back, and we’ll have another game similar to these two team’s first meeting earlier this month.
