The Cleveland Cavaliers were supposed to cruise past the New York Knicks on Thursday night in LeBron James’ first home game since returning to his first NBA team. However, they flopped and lost outright as a 12.5-point favorite on the NBA betting lines. Now they head to Chicago in a matchup of the East’s best teams.

The Cleveland Cavaliers Can Win Because…
The Cavs should have steam coming out of their ears after a flat performance on opening night against the New York Knicks. LeBron James was not hitting shots and never got into the flow of the Cavs’ halfcourt offense. Cleveland’s defense was thought to be the weak spot for the team this season, but it was the Cavaliers’ offense which really let them down against the Knicks. What really came up to the surface as a point of concern for Cleveland is that while LeBron and Kevin Love are world-class players, they are having to integrate themselves into a larger team with so many people who are not used to working with them. Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson, Anderson Varejao, and many others are facing the pressure of playing with LeBron and Love, not to mention the pressure that goes with playing for big stakes, such as a championship and a big moment to the city of Cleveland. The Cavaliers looked very uncoordinated and disorganized against the Knicks.

This is all a very big wake-up call for the team and a challenge that you know LeBron will respond to. When he plays poorly in one game, he bounces back in the next. He did this with the Miami Heat, and there’s no reason why he can’t or won’t do this many times with Cleveland, starting against Chicago.

The Chicago Bulls Can Win Because…
They're the better team than Cleveland right now. Emphasize the words “right now.” Cleveland will probably come together as a team. The Cavs’ players will get on the same page, and the young guys will learn how to coordinate with LeBron James and Kevin Love. Cleveland wasn’t going to be this perfect team from the very beginning of the season. The Cavaliers were going to have to improve; it’s just that their issues were supposed to be on defense, not on offense, as shown in the loss to the Knicks on Thursday night.

However, while Cleveland might get things together in the long run, the short term favors the Bulls. Chicago was very effective on defense against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, blowing out the home team inside Madison Square Garden. The Bulls have Derrick Rose back, and they don’t have the foreign pieces the Cavs do. Cleveland has tried to assemble a new team from various other teams in the offseason. Chicago has a relatively intact team with a few outsiders but a lot of core guys who have been within the organization for several years. This is why Chicago has a more cohesive team right now, and it should be able to shut down the Cavs’ sputtering offense on Friday night.

Chicago might not be the better team in March or April, but it’s the better team right now. After watching Cleveland's disaster of an effort last night, there's no way anyone can conceivably bet them right now. If their offense struggled against the Knicks, they'll have a really hard time against the Bulls.

For the purposes of betting on this game, go with the Bulls for your NBA picks.
