When the Boston Celtics visit the San Antonio Spurs we will have a matchup of two of the best basketball minds in the league in Gregg Popovich and Brad Stevens. The Spurs have been made a solid home favorite in this spot but it seems the Celtics have enough to keep this interesting.

Boston Celtics

Although Boston has lost two games in a row they are playing much better overall since their sluggish start to the season. They have been playing better defense recently while still maintaining some solid offensive efficiency across the board. Tonight they will have their hands full against a Spurs team that can light it up from distance and remain as one of the most efficient teams in the league. Currently, the Celtics are allowing opponents to shoot just 44.1% overall and 33.9% from distance ranking them seventh and eighth in the league respectively. On the other side of the ball they have been going at a more controlled rate than their up-tempo style last but they still remain among the best in the league in scoring the ball. The Celtics rank ninth and 11th in shooting efficiency and effective field goal percentage, but what I like best about Brad Stevens’s offense is their ball movement averaging 24.8 assists per game which ranks third in the NBA.

 San Antonio Spurs

The machine continues to hum right along in San Antonio as the Spurs sit at 19-5 on the season. Although they are only averaging 103.4 points per game they are just allowing 97.8 which ranks fourth in the NBA. Offensively they have been one of the more efficient teams in the league ranking seventh and eighth in shooting efficiency and effective field goal percentage respectively, and like the Celtics, they move the ball well averaging 23.3 assists per game which ranks sixth. Of course, their defense is their foundation but they have not been as lock down of a D as we have seen in years past which I believe gives the Celtics a very good shot at staying within the number. Currently, the Spurs rank just 16th in the league in opponent overall shooting percentage.

NBA Odds

Oddsmakers have the Celtics as a +8 underdog across the board. For my NBA pick, I will grab the points and look Boston to possibly even pull off the upset. This will be a great game to watch with two unselfish teams that are well coached.
