The Golden State Warriors and Portland Trail Blazers are both trying to make their ascent up the Western Conference standings. Both want to prove they are better than the second tier. The Trail Blazers are a three-point favorite on the NBA betting lines for Sunday’s matchup at the Rose Garden/

The Golden State Warriors Can Win Because…
They’ve come out of the gates on fire so far. The Warriors have won both of their two opening games by wide margins. They stomped the Sacramento Kings by 18 on the road and then came home and crushed the Los Angeles Lakers by 23. So far, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have looked phenomenal while the inside presence has been very reliable.

Portland has had a really tough time containing Curry in recent meetings as the Warriors have won two of their last three in Portland. Curry is averaging a whopping 40.7 points per game in those matchups. If he gets to that number tonight, there’s an excellent chance the Warriors win.

The issue for Portland in this matchup is that they aren’t a great defensive team. The Warriors are perfectly happy engaging almost anyone in the NBA in a shootout. Since the Blazers aren’t known as a team that can clamp down, that’s an advantage to the Warriors since they’re on the road here. They can win a track meet in this one.

The Portland Trail Blazers Can Win Because…
Golden State hasn’t played anyone yet. Sure, they beat the Kings and the Lakers but those two teams are among the worst in the NBA. A visit to Portland will be their first true test of the season and one they’ll likely fail.

The Warriors are the same as they were last year: heavily reliant on guard play and scoring. That should mean that LaMarcus Aldridge has a big game. He has averaged 24.0 PPG and 14.8 RPG in the last four meetings and if he’s in that range tonight, the Trail Blazers will be hard to beat.

The other issue for Golden State is that they are in a back-to-back situation. They hosted the Lakers last night and have a quick turnaround to get to Portland and get ready for this one. Advantage Portland.

The Warriors do play well in this series as they’ve won and covered the NBA betting odds two of three times at the Rose Garden and won five of the last seven meetings overall. That being the case, they’re worth a look in this spot.

The issue here seems to be that Damian Lillard doesn’t fare so well against the Warriors – maybe because he’s forced to play so much defense and tires out on the offensive end. He shot 31% against the Warriors last season, which was his worst against any one team. The Blazers can’t win if one of their big two is having an off night.

That being the case, add the Warriors plus the points to your NBA picks. They should have an excellent shot to win this game outright.
