Spurs Close To Clinching
Even though they can not mathematically clinch the number one overall seed in the playoffs with a win, the Spurs can virtually eliminate any chance of the Thunder coming back to overtake them in the final days with a win tonight in Dallas. It won’t be easy, as the NBA Odds have the Spurs as +2 underdogs, with a total of 202 ½.
This would be a nice time for the Spurs to play one last game hard before taking a much-needed break before the playoffs start next week. They have already been resting players, and by the looks of things, they could rest some more tonight. However, if Greg Popovich wants to put things to bed tonight, I could see him playing all of his players to try and get the win.
Tony Parker sat out last game with a bad back, and even though Pop said the injury is not serious, they are going to baby Parker as much as possible. The Spurs have no chance of getting back to the NBA Finals without Parker playing his best basketball, so even if the Spurs try for the win here, they could hold Parker out as a precaution.
Manu Ginobli also sat out for the Spurs in their loss to Wolves, however I believe his reasoning for sitting out was just rest, and not injury related. Dallas will obviously be gunning for a win here to solidify their spot in the playoffs a little more, but I do think the Spurs will try and win this game also, and I think their NBA Odds are undervalued because of it.
The Sharp Pick
The Spurs have covered two of their last three meetings with the Mavs, as well as five of the last seven times they have played one another. Even with their injuries, the Spurs are still a solid defensive team, and they have shown it against the Mavs this season. Dallas is averaging an astounding 109 points per game in their last ten, but they are averaging only 101 points per game against the Spurs this season. As long as the Mavs don’t get too far into the 100s tonight, the Spurs should have great value at +2 for our basketball picks.
The Spurs have also covered their last three trips in a row when going into Dallas, and even though they are coming off one of their worst losses of the new year, the Spurs play well this season when coming off an ATS loss. After losing a game this season, the Spurs are 11-6 ATS in their next game.
As always, when it comes to Spurs games, make sure you double-check the statuses of all the veterans for this team. I can’t imagine Popovich openly resting players in this game considering it might be a first round playoff matchup if the Mavs drop some. Their should be word out in the morning of whether or not Parker will play in this game, and as long as he does, the Spurs provide excellent value at +2 on the road.
NBA Pick: Spurs +2
