The Utah Jazz have a new head coach and a lot of young players. These players are going to be tested when they face a Dallas Mavericks team that almost beat the defending champions. There appears to be a big gap between the teams, which is why the Mavs are big favorites on the NBA betting lines.

The Utah Jazz Can Win Because…
The Jazz are young, so even though they played the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night, this back-to-back set of games on Wednesday and Thursday should not physically deter them. They’ll be resilient enough to handle a back-to-back this early in the season. Older teams with 38- and 40-year-old players should be treated with a lot more caution and concern. The Jazz don’t fit that description at all. New coach Quin Snyder will be able to look at what his team did in its first regular season game against Houston, a 104-93 loss, and make corrections that will help his team play more effectively.

Another thing that could help the Jazz cover the spread is that Dallas center Tyson Chandler, re-acquired by the team in the offseason after spending a few seasons with the New York Knicks, suffered what seemed to be an aggravated back injury in the season opener on Tuesday night against the San Antonio Spurs. The back has been balky and bothersome for Chandler each of the past few years. His health was outstanding in 2011, when he led the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA title with his defense and rebounding, but now, he’s a much frailer player, and this is something that will really hurt Dallas, since the team lost rebounding force DeJuan Blair to the Washington Wizards in the offseason. The Jazz could exploit this particular injury and make very good use of it on the road.

The Dallas Mavericks Can Win Because…
They're still the far better team than the Jazz, even if Chandler is unable to play in this game. Chandler left the San Antonio game with that injury, but even so, Dallas – down by 10 in the fourth quarter – rallied to tie the game and briefly took a one-point lead. San Antonio answered, but the Mavericks had a chance to win the game on the final shot, but a three-pointer by Chandler Parsons bounced off the rim. The loss was a tough one, but Dallas once again showed that after taking the Spurs to seven games in the first round of the 2014 NBA playoffs, it was still relatively equal to San Antonio on the first night of the new season. This is a loaded team, a good team, and it is going to have some staying power this season. Monta Ellis is going to get even better and better at the point, and Parsons gives this team some added defense, shooting range, and energy at both ends of the court. The Jazz are not as experienced as the Mavericks, but they’re also not as well coached, and most of all, Dallas is too good at certain positions – especially with Ellis and Nowitzki – for Utah’s younger players to handle, especially on defense. Dallas should score a lot in this game.

Outlook
The Jazz are still at least a year away if not two. The Mavericks could contend for a title this season. For our free NBA picks, this is a game Dallas should win comfortably.
