For Groundhog’s Day we will examine the most appealing line moves in sports today, offering free picks which are 14-6 lately. With the Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, we focus on NBA, NHL and NCAA basketball.
NBA Picks: Magic vs. Thunder 8:05 ET FS-FL, FS-OK
Well, so much for everything falling into place for Oklahoma City once Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were back in the lineup together with their other Thunder teammates. OKC is 1-4 and 0-5 ATS in their past five outings (does beating Minnesota even count?) and their offense has gone colder than the response to Nationwide’s Super Bowl commercial. The Thunder are averaging 89.8 points a game recently and little wonder the total has tumbled from 210 to 208, even with Orlando allowing 109 PPG in their last five.
SBR Prediction: Lean Under at 5Dimes
NBA Picks: Grizzlies vs. Suns 9:05 ET SPSO, FA-AZ
Memphis has won six in a cover over Phoenix and covered on each occasion, no wonder those making NBA picks had the Grizzlies on the move from -1 to -3. Overall, Memphis is 8-2 and 7-2-1 ATS in recent gatherings and is a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS at Planet Orange (U.S. Airways Center). The Grizz are also 10-1 (8-2-1 ATS) and have won six in a row, holding opposing teams to 82.6 points a game in the last half dozen. While Phoenix is capable of winning with their offense, it is hard to go against the betting odds given the head to head disparity.
SBR Prediction: Memphis covers
NCAA Basketball Picks: Iowa State vs. Kansas 9:00 ET ESPN
College basketball handicappers and others are waiting this Big 12 rematch on Big Monday. Iowa State won the last confrontation 86-81 in Ames just over two weeks ago as 4.5-point favorites with a total of 147. Sportsbooks elevated the number to what they thought was an appropriate level of 154.5, given the prior result, but this has not held up and it is down two points to 152.5. One factor as to why could be Kansas sporting a 23-8 UNDER record revenging a loss where the opponent scored 75 or more points. Nonetheless, six of the last seven battles have been OVER’s and the Jayhawks are 15-4 OVER as home favorites since last season.
SBR Prediction: Lean Over
NHL Picks: Oilers vs. Sharks 10:35 ET FS-MW, SPSO
Normally I would not write about such a big money line favorite versus the NHL odds, but given today’s light overall betting card, needed one more game and this one fits. San Jose is up 20 cents to -285 and they are playing their seventh and final game of the homestand. The Sharks are only 14-11 at the Shark Tank, but they are 13-1 against Edmonton in their own building since 2008. Though the Oilers have won two of their past three away contests, they are still 4-20 on the season and certainly would be a shot in the dark for a win.
SBR Prediction: San Jose wins
