Pretenders vs. Contenders
If you want a pretty good idea of just how the gambling public views your favorite NBA team, then all you have to do is consider what the NBA odds makers are dealing. It's obvious from the chart above, before a second of the season has been played, that the Eastern Conference is viewed as a three-horse race with the defending World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers as the overwhelming favorite to wind up back in the championship finals.
Yet the season is long and injuries can sometimes derail a promising season for a team seemingly destined to make a deep run in the playoffs. And because of that, it would be unwise, in my opinion, to actually lay north of -200 to include LeBron and the Cavaliers in your NBA picks to win the East. Even though we can all make a seamless case that they are indeed the most talented squad in the East, it is the betting value that we should take into consideration. Had the oddsmakers made them a more palatable even money favorite where we could bet $100 to make $100 it might be tolerable. But anything more than that for an NBA prop future bet that won't be settled until late May or early June is just a bit too much to ask.
The Boston Celtics +600 could be a sharp wager where betting $100 now could reap you $500 in May. The Shamrocks were on a quest to land high-profile free agent Kevin Durant but ultimately fell short as KD took Golden State's offer to make an already ridiculously talented team even more absurdly stacked. However, Boston did manage to woo Big Al Horford from the nest of the Atlanta Hawks +1700 all the way to Causeway Street. The offshore sports books are bullish on the Celtics and perhaps so too should you.
The Toronto Raptors, at NBA odds of +1400, could also be a viable wager. Toronto, as you may recall, went all the way to the Conference Finals last season and battled the Cleveland Cavaliers before they ultimately bowed in six games.
As a dark horse contender, I turn your attention to the Chicago Bulls, +2500 at PaddyPower, who added Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo to their roster and could be a big surprise this coming season.
But whatever you do, make sure you go shopping at the best sports betting sites and check the bonuses they are offering, that way you get the best lines that will give you the greatest bang for your gambling buck.
