What does April basketball mean in the NBA? At times, it can mean you are watching a D-League roster when teams already locked into a playoff seed decide to rest all its top players. That’s the case Friday when San Antonio visits Dallas.

San Antonio Spurs At Dallas Mavericks

I would not recommend backing the San Antonio Spurs to win another game the rest of the 2016-17 regular season. They are locked into the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, and no coach rests his key guys more than San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich. He doesn’t much care what the TV networks or fans who bought tickets think about it.

The Spurs play the first of a back-to-back on Friday night in Dallas and opened as 2.5-point favorites on NBA odds. Expect the Mavericks to be favored by tipoff because every key Spur already has been ruled out: Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol, Manu Ginobili, Danny Green and Dejounte Murray. Tony Parker isn’t listed, but I guarantee he won’t play many minutes if he does go.

Leonard has said he’d like to not rest, but Popovich only cares about full health come the postseason. I have no idea who the starting five will be Friday. Expect plenty of guys like Patty Mills, Jonathan Simmons, David Lee, Kyle Anderson, Davis Bertans and Dewayne Dedmon. NBA action: It’s fantastic!

Dallas has been eliminated from the playoffs so it’s not clear if the Mavs also will do Operation Sitdown, although I’m sure they will play some key guys in front of the home crowd. Starting guard Seth Curry has missed the past three games with an actual injury (left shoulder) and is questionable.

The Spurs and Mavericks haven’t played since Jan. 29, when Dallas won 105-101 in San Antonio to end a seven-game regular-season losing streak in the series. The Mavericks trailed by 10 at halftime. Thus it snapped the Spurs’ streak of 117 straight wins in home games that they led by at least 10 points at the half. The Spurs have won three straight and seven of the last nine regular-season showdowns in Dallas.
