The Hawks and Nets are still in their first round of the NBA playoffs; and tonight they're playing game 6. The Hawks are favored tonight by the odds makers and Joe Gavazzi is here to share his NBA pick for this game.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Brooklyn Nets 8:00 ET ESPN
In this Game 6, Round 1, best of 7 series we find the Atlanta Hawks visiting the Brooklyn Nets for an 8:05 ET start. Currently the Hawks are listed as the clear favorites on the NBA odds for tonight.  In Game 5, on Wednesday night (a 107-97 win), Brooklyn battled back from a double digit deficit to come within 2 points of the Hawks with 2 minutes remaining.  At that point in the 5 game series, only 1 point separated the two teams after 238 minutes of play.  But, Atlanta closed out the game on a 10-2 run to get the victory and the improbable cover.   Now, the action resumes in Brooklyn where the Nets won both Game 3 and Game 4.  With Brooklyn now trailing in the series 3 games to 2, they return to their home court, knowing the host has won all 5 games of this series.  In that game, there was an improbable star for Brooklyn as Anderson came off the bench to lead the Nets with 23 points.  Regrettably for Brooklyn, point guard, D. Williams, regressed to his previous form scoring just 5 points.

The above scenario sets ups today’s handicapper’s conundrum.  We are forced to decide whether to follow the momentum of the superior team, Atlanta, to close out the series or to back the home team, Brooklyn Nets, to extend the 5-0 SU home team magic of this series.

Brooklyn was a second half team this year, having gone 19-16 SU since their 21-31 SU pre-break record. The experienced veterans in the persons of Johnson, Lopez and D. Williams have led the way.  It will be imperative for Williams, who scored 35 points on 7 of 11 (3) pointers in Game 4, to approach that form if the Nets are to win this game.  In addition, it will be necessary that Brooklyn duplicates their combined 23 TOs of the 2 previous games.  Should those two events occur, Brooklyn can send this series to Atlanta for a 7th game on Sunday.

Atlanta was an NBA best 43-11 SU at the break.  That included runs of 36-5 and 22-3 SU.  At that time, the Hawks had also been 18-3 ATS to -9.  Since the All Star Break, however, complacency has set in for this over-achieving team.  They are just 20-13 SU with teams being more respectful and mindful of their patterns.

Bottom line here is that the Nets are a veteran team, who have proven to themselves they are capable of playing with No. 1 seeded, Atlanta. No surprise to this bureau if Brooklyn wins this game outright or at the worst takes it to the final shot, so back them with your NBA picks .
