The Atlanta Hawks are on fire perched at the top of the Eastern Conference and third overall in the League. Find out how their NBA futures odds look as we break down the Hawks' strategy and takes a look at future challanges on their schedule to come throughout the season.

The Atlanta Hawks are sitting at No. 1 in the ESPN Power Rankings, No. 1 in the Eastern Conference and are on pace to beat their franchise record of 62 games. Could we be looking at the Hawks as the team to win the East? They haven’t taken that title since the 1960-61 seasons, but things are looking up for this Hawks squad.

Coach Mike Budenholtzer implemented a theory when he began in Atlanta in 2013 that the absence of superstars makes for a better Hawks franchise, and it’s working.  There are no ball hogs, no stars or showoffs, only partnership, teamwork and a want to win - no matter who has the most points.

The Hawks will see everyone ranked in the top 4 below them in the East over the next couple of weeks, and will face No. 2 Chicago Bulls and No. 3 Toronto Raptors in a back-to-back series on the road.  However they are off to an excellent start in those weeks after taking a win against the No. 3 in the West, the Memphis Grizzlies, on Wednesday 96-86.

Interestingly enough, the Hawks have struggled to cover ATS against low-ranked Eastern Conference bottom feeders  (Bucks, twice against Magic, Celtic, twice against Raptors, Hornets), and 7-of-11 of their losses ATS were at home. They tend to do well on the road together taking only 4 losses ATS in 17 games on the road.

They will also face big challenges in February through the beginning of March. They are playing big teams like Golden State, Memphis, Houston and Cleveland. Those games will be tests to see how big of a contender they will be in the playoffs. Before adding them to your NBA picks for this year's Eastern Conference Title, we think it best to wait and see how they perform through this stretch. However, for now it’s nice to see something new and fresh ridding the top of the rankings.

According to Bovada, the Hawks are 5/1 to win the National NBA title. That’s impressive considering they started the season with 100-to-1 chance to win it. They were tied with the Celtics, Nuggets, Pelicans and Suns during the beginning. Odds makers should take them much more seriously from here on out.  Here is how the NBA odds currently list the Eastern Conference Future odds to win the Eastern Conference:

  1. Cleveland Cavaliers:  2/1
  2. Chicago Bulls: 8/5
  3. Atlanta Hawks: 5/1
