NBA training camps start this weekend and while free agent Carmelo Anthony has been working hard in the offseason, looking to prove that he deserves another chance in the league, it seems that it is not meant to be for him.

Anthony is one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history and despite looking good in workout videos, returning to the league seems like an uphill climb for him.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium wrote an article explaining why the Nets, the only team linked to Anthony recently, won't sign him:

"Meanwhile, the free agency of Carmelo Anthony continues, with NBA teams and even USA Basketball passing on bringing in the 10-time All-Star this summer. The Athletic's NBA Inside Pass did a breakdown of Anthony's situation in late July, and not much has changed beyond external hope and speculation.

Several of the clear fits, such as the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks, have full rosters. Anthony is awaiting the call, and one union that appeared to have legs was with the Brooklyn Nets. Brooklyn added two stars and champions in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving this offseason, so the electricity around the franchise is palpable.

After losing Wilson Chandler to a 25-game suspension, Anthony and players such as Dante Cunningham, Lance Thomas and Luol Deng emerged as viable options to sign. There's been a sense around the Nets that players are hopeful to bring in Anthony, but the trust belongs with the front office.

However, the Nets are very unlikely to sign Anthony as of now, league sources told The Athletic."

Carmelo Anthony recently played against two-time NBA champion and new Lakers guard Danny Green and he flashed shot creation ability and was able to make jumpers from all over the court while also dunking, just like in his best days. A potential new team won't give Anthony so much responsibility but seeing that he is still a skilled offensive performer against a quality NBA defender is encouraging.

The video also evidences that Melo looks slimmer and with an explosive first step for his age. There were conditioning concerns about him in recent years so teams in need of a scorer off the bench should at least consider him for a veteran's minimum deal.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Slim Melo was giving the business to Danny Green 👀🔥

(🎥 @Cbrickley603 ) pic.twitter.com/AeIHY0mgbR
— NBA Central (@TheNBACentral) September 8, 2019
"}[/]

Melo has averaged 24.0 points in 1064 career games (1056 starts) with the Nuggets, Knicks, Thunder and Rockets but he hasn't played in the NBA since November 11, 2018 against the Thunder when he scored just two points on 1-for-11 from the field (9.1 percent) and grabbed five rebounds over 20 minutes.

He signed a $2.4 million veteran's minimum deal with the Rockets last season but he played just 10 games for them before being traded to the Bulls for the draft rights of Tadija Dragićević. Anthony never played a game with the Bulls and was released in January. The 10-time NBA All-Star averaged 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game with the Rockets.

The 35-year-old had an early morning training session with LeBron James and Chris Paul on August 9, has participated in informal scrimmages with Nets players in Los Angeles and unofficially scrimmaged with the Knicks. He also looked great at Chris Brickley's Black Ops Basketball Run and as mentioned above, faced Danny Green.

Odds To Win The NBA Championship
(Courtesy of 5Dimes)

Los Angeles Clippers +420

Los Angeles Lakers +440

Milwaukee Bucks +570

Philadelphia 76ers +725

Houston Rockets +750

Golden State Warriors +1200

Utah Jazz +1200

Denver Nuggets +2000

Boston Celtics +2600

Brooklyn Nets +3000

Portland Trail Blazers +3000

New Orleans Pelicans +5500

Toronto Raptors +5500

Indiana Pacers +6600

Dallas Mavericks +9500

Miami Heat +10000

San Antonio Spurs +10500

Orlando Magic +18500

Sacramento Kings +20000

Atlanta Hawks +27500

Detroit Pistons +30000

Minnesota Timberwolves +36500

Oklahoma City Thunder +50000

Chicago Bulls +50000

Phoenix Suns +56500

Washington Wizards +100000

New York Knicks +100000

Memphis Grizzlies +100000

Cleveland Cavaliers +150000

Charlotte Hornets +200000
