Washington chances of catching Atlanta in the Southeast Division appear to be slim, now trailing the Hawks by seven games. The Wizards need to work some magic versus the NBA odds to begin playing better again.

For all the good Denver accomplished in the first half of the month with their five-game winning streak, they have given in all back on dropping the next five  contests. NBA basketball handicappers and those studying the NBA odds have seen the patterns the Nuggets have fallen into and are following them to capitalize financially.

Tonight’s matchup could come down to something as simple as desire and if that is true, who has the edge?

Washington in rut, needs to play their way out if it
After starting 22-8 this season, Washington (29-15, 21-22-1 ATS) is 7-7 SU and ATS since Dec. 30. Earlier this week, Randy Wittman’s team looked to be distancing itself from mediocrity with back to back wins over Brooklyn and Philadelphia, but consecutive losses to Oklahoma City and Portland last night leaves them frustrated.

The last two defeats have hurt, being outscored by 12 points by OKC in the second half, which led to 105-103 OT loss on Thursday. And last evening, after taking a commanding 32-20 lead on the Trail Blazers, they were defenseless to stop LaMarcus Aldridge and were out-pointed by eight in the last quarter to fall 103-96.

The Wizards missteps have come in various fashions. Some nights it’s been too many miscues as on four occasions that have committed 19 or more turnovers in this stretch. Other times they have been lackadaisical in rebounding or suffered breakdowns on defense, all which have help make them just another .500 club of late.

Washington is also .500 this season when paying without rest against the spread, which does not make them inviting for setting up NBA picks.

Nuggets have to regroup, again
If you don’t like rollercoaster’s, rest assured you would not the Denver basketball franchise. The Nuggets (18-25, 16-24-3 ATS) began the season 1-6, followed that up with an 8-2 spurt and looked settled. That way of thinking proved inaccurate, as Denver last 12 of their next 16 only to do a 180 and win five in a row.

Well, like the weather at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, all you have to do it wait a bit and it will change again and Denver is now in the throes of a five-game losing stretch. Ty Lawson did not help matters by being charged with a DUI early Friday morning and as Bejamin Hochman of the Denver Post wrote, “Ty Lawson earns the price of a cab ride per dribble.”

What do the Nuggets do to exit this latest funk, it starts be caring about defense, since in the last five games, Denver has surrendered 108.2 points a contest, with opposing teams shooting a robust 48.9 percent from the field. Denver has to also be wiser in shot selection, hitting a paltry 40.9%, which has correlated to 94.2 PPG.

Betting Odds and Head to Head
Washington is 3-2 and 3-1-1 ATS the past three seasons against Denver, which includes a 30-point pasting at home back on Dec.5th. The Nuggets however are 5-1 and 4-2 ATS in the Wizards most recent visits.

Sportsbooks have made John Wall’s club a 2.5-point road favorite with a total of 204.5, after it was determined Lawson is “probable’ this evening. This is the first time the Wizards are favored in Colorado since Dec. of 2006.

The schedule-makers were unkind to Washington, having to play four games in five days on the road. Tomorrow will be an off day, but they resume on Tuesday against the Lakers and have to play the fast-paced Suns to close the trip, which sets up to be arduous. The Wizards are 7-3 and 5-5 ATS with no time off.

Denver wraps up the homestand with is contest and will be away from home for three games starting tomorrow. The excursion is hardly ideal, being at the Clippers tomorrow, flying to New Orleans for Wednesday and the next night in Memphis. The Nuggets are .500 SU and against the spread with one day off. (12-2, 11-11-2 ATS)

The Choice
Washington might be scuffling, yet they still have better players, appear to be more disgusted with their recent play and caring more. At this price it makes sense to back the Wizards with NBA picks tonight.
