The Boston Celtics aren’t wasting any time with their road swing through Texas this season. In the first week of the new season, the Celtics are moving through Dallas to take on the Mavericks. The Mavs are a big 9.5-point favorite on the NBA betting lines

Opening NBA odds first lined this game with Dallas as a 9 point favorite, but early betting action has since extended that line to 10 points as some NBA betting shops. The Over/Under has also seen a little bit of action, as online sportsbooks have seen the total rise from 208 to 208.5.

The Boston Celtics Can Win Because…
They are scoring at a much higher rate than they did last season, even though the season is only two games old. A lot of people might scream “small sample size!” as far as the Celtics are concerned, but this team still has to be encouraged by what it has done on offense. Boston has Rajon Rondo in the lineup. Rondo recuperated ahead of schedule after injuring his hand early in the preseason. With Rondo orchestrating the offense on the floor, Boston has much more of a fighting chance in each game it plays. Rondo’s jump shot has been questioned in the past because it is suspect, and he hasn’t been able to hit that shot with the consistency he would like. However, in other parts of basketball, Rondo’s skills exist beyond question or reproach. He is a tremendous passer. He is a top-notch floor leader. He gets his teammates in the right positions on the floor and helps give an offense the spacing it needs. Boston’s offense has played only two games, it is true, but the Celtics had a hard time scoring more than 100 points per game last season. This season, they’ve averaged over 105 points per game. They have not had to go through a long and difficult re-adjustment period with a much less accomplished point guard running the show. They can rightly feel they can get the shot they want against the Mavericks, who allowed 104 points in their most recent game.

The Dallas Mavericks Can Win Because…
They're in position to score a lot, and what’s more is that they have been rolling on offense this season. The Mavericks’ one loss this season was a game in which they scored 100 points on the road against the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. That’s not a bad performance. The Mavericks then hung 120 points on the Utah Jazz and followed that up by scoring 109 points against the New Orleans Pelicans. Dallas has really found a comfort zone on offense because Monta Ellis is such a great fit for the team at point guard. Ellis is quick off the dribble and can immediately shake his defender. He can cause his man to chase him, which initiates a chain reaction in which the defense moves toward him and leaves wing players open. It’s easy to look at the shooting of Dirk Nowitzki or the new presence of Chandler Parsons, but it’s Ellis who stirs the drink for this offense. Rondo is going to have a hard time staying with him, opening the door for Dallas to thrive against a Boston team that could not slow down the Houston Rockets this past Saturday in a 104-90 loss.

Outlook
The Mavericks are comfortable on offense, more so than the Celtics. It’s not that Boston is deficient on offense – the Celtics have made progress there – but Dallas is just grooved in, and that’s going to be hard for Boston to stop. The Celtics got smoked 104-90 in Houston on Saturday and the same type of result should be coming on Monday, so lay the points with your NBA picks here.
