Join us Friday for US Open Day 12, where the Women's semifinals take place and the two top seeds try to book a place in the final.
Serena Williams vs. Roberta Vinci
Serena Williams needed three sets to defeat her sister Venus Williams in the quarterfinals of US Open, where both played at very superb level but was the higher ranked Serena who managed to emerge victorious. Serena ended the match with outstanding numbers: 12 aces, 35 winners, 22 unforced errors and 9/11 net points won.
Roberta Vinci reached for the first time semi-finals of a Grand Slam event after losing twice in US Open quarter-finals (2012 and 2013). The Italian used her very tricky game style to dismantle Mladenovic powerful game with her slice backhand being clearly the key shot in the match.
Roberta has nothing to lose on this match but also her chances are quite low against the World No. 1. This will be the 5th meeting between them and Vinci was never able to take a single set, the most recent meeting was in Toronto, couple weeks ago, where Williams won 6 – 4 6 – 3. Serena said that Vinci is a very tough opponent with her unique game style, however there isn’t much the Italian can do on this match. Roberta was very vulnerable against Mladenovic but the French was just too erratic ending with 51 winners / 64 unforced errors, but Serena is already used to play against Vinci slice backhand and will know how to handle with it.
Despite Vinci’s very low chances there isn’t value on Serena handicap for this match, the pressure is all in Serena side while Vinci will play with nothing to lose and she should be able to win couple of games in each set. Our advice is to skip this match where there isn’t value on any of the two players, Serena is clearly the favorite with her spread -6.5 at -115 tennis odds however this will be a very mental match and can’t trust Serena to cover the spread on this contest.
Flavia Pennetta vs. Simona Halep
Simona Halep made one of her best performances of the year to defeat Victoria Azarenka in three sets. The Romanian ended the match with impressive 40 winners / 19 unforced errors using her counter puncher skills to explore Azarenka’s inconsistency. After struggling physically against Lisicki, Simona appeared in much better shape and will fight for her second Grand Slam final.
Flavia Pennetta loves the US Open and will play her second semi-finals in New York after losing to Azarenka in 2013. Flavia defeated the 5th seed Petra Kvitova who clearly struggled with the hot conditions and allowed the Italian to comeback from one set down. Flavia was very smart on court keeping the ball in play and waiting for Petra’s errors who finished the match with 41 winners / 60 unforced errors.
Pennetta leads the h2h 3 – 1 however there was only one meeting since Halep is a top 10 player, this year in Miami where Simona won 6 – 3 7 – 5. Simona is the big favorite for this one and deserves to be after the massive performance she did against Azarenka, however the World No. 2 has always struggled mentally and this won’t be an easy match for her with the possibility of reaching a Grand Slam final. Pennetta is an extremely experienced player and knows how to create problems to higher level players like she did in quarterfinals against Kvitova.
