Belinda Bencic (8) vs Monica Puig (q)
With a great performance on quarterfinals against Ekaterina Makarova, Belinda Bencic booked a place on WTA Sydney’s semifinals. We picked Bencic as our top tennis selection for quarterfinals and the Suisse proved to be a good investment. It was a classic WTA match with many ups and down, but at the end was Belinda who emerged victorious by 6 – 0 2 – 6 6 – 4. Despite being only 18 years old, Bencic already shows a tremendous mental strength. After a rusty start against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, the Suisse dismissed Tsvetana Pironkova and Makarova, saving 84.0% of break points on those two matches. Belinda also raised her service level against Makarova, firing 6 aces.

Monica Puig will be looking to reach her second career final on WTA, after grabbing the title two years ago in Strasbourg. Puig has been pointed as a very promising player for couple of years, with her extremely aggressive baseline game and powerful groundstrokes, however the Puerto Rican player has struggled to present her best tennis on a consistent basis. This has been a dream week for Monica, after reaching the main draw the qualifier surprised higher ranked players like Magdalena Rybarikova, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Samantha Stosur. Puig’s stats against Stosur were impressive, ending the match with 13 aces, 27 winners and 17 unforced errors.

This will be the first career match between two promising young players.

Monica’s performance against Stosur was close from perfection, but she’s known for her inconsistency and it will be extremely hard for her to keep the same level. It’s also important to mention that Stosur allowed Puig to play her game, giving too many soft balls for the Puerto Rican to attack with her powerful groundstrokes. This time things will be much harder for Puig against such a terrific counter puncher and consistent player like Bencic. Despite losing a set against Makarova, the match was played at a very high level, with Bencic finding the mental strength to overcome the Russian. Belinda’s consistency and mental strength might be too much for Puig, while the Puerto Rican may become frustrated for not being able to present the same game level from the day before. With this in mind, we’ll add Belinda Bencic’s spread tennis odds to our tennis picks for this contest.
